Just to quote you DM, in the past you have said that the 460 GTX is 30% slower in most cases than a 5850, so this would make the 6870 slower than the 5850 by your reckoning, and the above article. Personally couldn't imagine AMD messing around with their numbering scheme, ending up with the 6870 on par/slower than a 5870/50, just wouldn't make sense, see what happens in a little bit I guess.

it could be that 6870 slower 5870 on dx 9 titles , but i would think maybe it would be faster on dx 11 , just have to wait for reviews not so much left, also after few moths of time 10 % bump in performance from drivers maybe.

but if fud is right 250 euros is around 220 £ bit expensive but if it equals or better 5870 maybe not so bad

But you could not call it competition for the GTX460 then, it would not be a GTX460 killer.

Yeah if it comes in at 200-220 then it wont be really competing with the 460 on price. Although I guess the 6850 will be the one doing that job. Otherwise what's the point of releasing new cards as it is at the 460 price point of 150-170 that AMD is lacking.

If AMD release a card that competes with the 460 rather than 480 then I'll wait for Nvidia's next performance offering.

Why, are the Nvidia cards that much better and are there some coming out? I was going for a 460 but am waiting for the AMD release first.

By performance I mean the next variant of the 480.

The 460 does not qualify as a performance part to me.

If it is 20% faster than 460 1GB then it will be slower than 5870 which would be ~7% faster again according to techpowerup.

Definitely poor of ATI releasing a slower 6870 compared to 5870

The 6870 is not meant to be ati's performance part either thats to be called 6970 and is the card you will be waiting for to judge performance against the gtx480. The 6970 if its to be named that is meant to be the top single gpu card from amd and the 6990 will be the dual gpu part.

Theres no hard facts either way just yet, lets wait for hard numbers from a reliable source.
So....
57XX gets renamed/ slight tweak and becomes 67XX (replacing ????)
???? gets new core and becomes 6850/70 (replacing 57XX)
5850/70 gets new core becomes 6950/70 (replacing 58XX)
5970 gets 2 new cores becomes 6990 (replacing 5970)

Is this correct? Can anyone fill in the blanks?

So basically the new 6850/6870 are not really replacing anything as amd never had the gtx460 price point covered but we will have to wait and see if this is the case as the the 6850/6870 could still come out with the 6750/6770 name. As it stands its all just rumour atm.

Well I just sold one of my 5870's yesterday, got a decent price. Only sold because x-fire and eyefinity is a joke. Need a single GPU with plenty of power so waiting for the 6000 series. What exactly are they calling the equivlent to a 5870 and 5890 ? Anyone have an educated guesses at what the performance might be ?

I thought AMD's press conference in which they will be releasing the 6 series is meant to be tomorrow the 12th of October? If not releasing it, then at least announcing it and officially revealing its specs e.t.c.
