child benefit to foreign kids

Why is it wrong?

In reality benefits are just part of the tax system - you're effectively getting a discount on the tax you pay for having a kid.

If you're working over here and paying UK taxes then IMO you should be entitled to the same deductions etc.. to your tax bill as anyone else.

The thing is that they aren't living here. I think a simple way to prevent this is to ensure that these children are enrolled at a UK school. I imagine the residency requirement is being tricked somehow (if this is true). If there isn't such a requirement, then its crazy.

It's not really a deduction in the sense a working tax credit would be though, is it? If I am working and don't have children, then it shouldn't really be any different than an EU worker with children living abroad.

as ghost101 said.
i have no problem with kids in this country recieving this.
but to be paying for kids, who have never set foot in this country, this is wrong.

i am irish, whats to stop me claiming for 2 or 3 kids in ireland?
i know i would probably have to show a birth certificate, but whats to stop me borrowing one off a friend or family and using this?

this is wide open for corruption/fraud

What if they are home educated?

...and what does it matter where they live? If anything it's CHEAPER for us if they live abroad as the children are less of a drain on our resources (education, health, etc).

Typical knee-jerk reaction by the tabloids to something they clearly haven't actually sat down and thought about.

My child benefit has stopped for my 16 yr old as he is now in an apprenceship and he only gets £10 a week for the first level!! I dont claim any working tax credits etc cos i work and with all wages together we wouldnt get it!
and like everyone in this soft country pay stupid amount of tax for other countries and people who feel they can come over here and take jobs etc etc.... If UK was in trouble wud all these other places come and help us out like we do for them! HELL NO! Goverment are useless!!

Tbh. There are a lot of things I protest against paying taxes for. Children isn't one of them, regardless of where they live. I'd rather pay for the welfare of a foreign child than a lazy unemployed chav.

The problem I have is there's no guarantee the recipient will use that money for the benefit of their child.

I'd replace cash payments with tokens for free food/stuff that every parent should need. I would offset the cost of implementing this system by reducing child benefit slightly.

i see what you are saying but at same time isnt it the childs parents job to go out and work and take care of their child, yes of cos people need extra help but if certain children are gonna get help from around the world from us then surly we shud get the help we all need first!

I still don't see why benefits should be paid for foreign residents. What about more expensive child tax credits? Housing benefits? Why is child benefit okay?

Home educated children have to be registered with the LEA as well.

They're not foreign residents though, the parents are the ones who are entitled to the benefit because they have children to support, and they are residing here.

No, they don't.

So who's monitoring whether they are getting their mandatory education?

What's mandatory education? The national curriculum isn't mandatory, nor is doing GCSEs or A-Levels, nor is attending school. The LEA (depending on which one) has the right to informally ask if the parents are providing a suitable education. They have NO other powers, NONE.

(edit; all 3 of our children are home educated, I know a HUGE amount about this after being through 3 battles - and winning all 3 - with our LEA)

So they are entitled to all children based benefits?

If they are residents here, then yes. Why does the location matter?

so when my wife and child went to the USA so i could do my immigration visa, and i phoned up the CBA and stopped the payments, i should have carried on claiming for my child who was now in the USA ? while i was still in the UK ?

I wonder how many eastern europeans have gone back home and still get the payments put into a bank account each month ?

Wow that is UTTERLY DISGUSTING.

I'm getting fed up of this....

Note to everyone outside the UK:-

WE DONT WANT YOU HERE, GO AWAY AND STAY IN UR OWN COUNTRY!!

Seriously.
