Have a look in the usual places, theres an auction for a 1997 540i touring for £1690.

Are they really this cheap now or is that a bad catch?

Those wheels are foul and really don't sit right with the car.

Cue Moeks to talk about the pitfalls of a cheap 540i.

I'd hazard a guess that it's because it's a 13/ 14 yr old car with 150k miles on, whilst it's not exactly going to break down tomorrow, 150k miles isn't really that desirable to the major public so the price will have to justify that. I don't know much about that specific model but i wouldn't say it was that cheap, or that expensive for that matter. Sounds like it's been looked after though :)

i just want a decent estate car, that will rarely be driven, for not a lot of initial outlay.

So tbh mileage is not really that much of a concern - i could do worse than have a look at it.

I'd rather have a £1500-£2000 e34 than e39. A £2k e34 will typically be in good condition, plus there is less to go wrong and they are simple to work on.

However if you can get to see that 540i before the auction ends, it may well be worth a look.

theres a nice purple e34 up on the wirral as well so I might check em both out this week.

Pointless car. At this money even a nice one might cost that again over a year so what's the point?

Cheap cars need to be cheap to run.

Depends - if you simply want basic transport on a budget then I agree.

OTOH if you want something unusual or a older premium marque and you go in with your eyes open then I don't see the problem. My cheap car has been quite expensive to run, but I knew it would and a more expensive example would still wouldn't have been cheap to run.

At that price it is almost disposable though if anything serious happens

I'd buy it, drive it and put it back on eBay when something big goes wrong. Even with a knackered engine it's bound to be worth £500 for spares. Maximum exposure, £1190.

This is always the way that I look at it. Whats the worst that can happen? If you're happy to have a punt for £1000 then go for it.

this is my thinking to be honest -

however the violet e34 looks mint so i'm going to check that one out first.
