Ok guys, im currently running a 4870 512mb card. Which realistically can't cut it these days. I am running at 1920x1080. MW2, L4D2 ,Call of Duty: Black Ops in the future. To be honest most of them play fine maxed out but the frames can dip.

The rest of the setup:
E6750@ 3.6Ghz.- I am presuming a possible bottleneck here?
P5N-E SLI Motherboard - Great board although some users had booting issues with the HD 5*** Series.
4gb DDR2 Crucial Ballistix Memory @ 840mhz.
Corsair 520hx PSU - More than enough i would presume!

So basically do you think I need an upgrade? I really believe the 512mb of memory atm on the card is a setback.

Any help would be awesome! Thanks. :)

Hi,

Firstly, you have a setup really similar to myself. Is your CPU air or water cooled? Either way, this could be a bottleneck as you have identified.

On the graphics card note, yes a card with 512mb memory could be limiting. For an upgrade I personally feel you would have to upgrade your PSU also, just to be on the safe side and depending what storage devices you run.

No doubt someone will disagree :D

The labeling of HD6000 series cards seems is gonna be a bit messy and confusing (with some rebranding going on). I think your best wait for the actual release of the cards to identify which card is the 'right card' for your budget and expected performance.

But yea...if you are upgrading your graphic card, you should ideally be dropping in a Quad core CPU as well...or may be considering upgrading the system all together (if you got the money that is) since nforce boards tends to be quite limiting in terms of overclocking CPU.

A 3.6GHz dual wont be that much of a bottleneck id guess. You could drop a Q6600 in there but youd be lucky to get it past 3Ghz on your board

for both i got £470 in my paypal account
i suggest you sell asap if your wanting as much money as poss,
i dont think they will go sub £200 just yet but just after xmas i reccon they will

You should read Toms Hardware look at gaming bottlenecks (it's on the front page) it might help you.

yeah but id be lost without my gaming, dont have another card to replace it with. Just with they would hurry up and provide some kind of information as im stuck in limbo just now. £470 was pretty decent, good job

i know, and now im stuck with a 8400gs, i played trackmania for 5 seconds then had to turn it off because of embarresment !
im happy i can still post on the beloved forum tho !
im just hoping they with give some details soon, its killing me all this speculation

You should try Minecraft, fun game that doesn't require much at all in terms of hardware.

I''m fairly positive the 6970 will kick ass, the 6870 will not out perform a 5870 and therefor a bad name change from AMD. The 6870 will perform similarly to a 5850 going by vantage scores floating around the net, maybe 10-20 % faster. I would expect a launch price of £170 for a 6870 and £350-400 for a 6870. There are rumors that the 6970/50 will come with more than 1GB of memory and are " TRUE " high end parts.

yeah ive seen all this from other threads, if all that speculation is correct then it'll be the 6970 ill be after. if its over priced and not much improvment then ill go nvidia for a while, been checking a few options but i wish it was all over

Im on air btw. Normally running at a cool 30C :) Have not even tweaked the voltages and it seems fine have been running it like that for more than a year now!

It's very sneaky the way they've done it, a lot of people will buy a 6870 thinking its the successor to 5870. :o
Yes...but if they are pricing them right, then I don't think it's too much of problem. Base on bit-tech's quote from another source for the initial performance of the 6850/6870, I think they need to price them at £150/£200 or less to be worth considering over the GTX460 1GB/GTX470...
