Porsche 911: All the same, crap to drive, just crap!

tvr has a reputation for not being particularly durable, with a noble, how do owners get along with technical issues given that there isnt exactly a huge network of dealers?

Fix it yourself or take it to a specialist. Just a V8 and a bathtub with some scaffolding holding it together....

your cars fall apart and you wish more and more you had chosen a porsche

thats in the handbook under warranty

This represents everything I don't like about cars.

I want refinement, insane power, and electronics to keep it all working when I press the button that says "go faster than everything else". If you can make that a great driver's car, it's nice, but a secondary concern.

I might get this review just to see how the Audi and Alpina came off relatively.

EDIT: "I don't like about" is probably too harsh a set of words - more "don't search for in"

My opinion on them has changed over the years, my Evo subscription may have had something to do with that ;)

I have never doubted their ability, I'd always just be a bit more drawn to a Ferrari. However, if I think about what I would actually have if I had that sort of money, I think really it would be some kind of 911.

Saying that, the decals on the gt3 rs are fugly, I'd spec mine without them, k thx!

Oh, and of course obligatory, 'boring' 'expensive VW' 'everyone has one' 'so common'.

I try not to think about them too much, as I don't think I'll have that sort of cash for a while :)

Perhaps I missed it but what were the other cars?

I'd still prefer a Nissan GTR + Switzer P800 package!

I'm quite impressed with the RS Megane Cup mixing it up with the big boys

I would love to say that I could comment on 911's but I've never had the pleasure of piloting one (or any other supercar for that matter)... maybe one day!

I like the comment on Autocar.

'comparing apples to oranges to see which makes the best orange juice'

My personal view on this would be that the extra grip of the GT3 might have something to do with cup tyres?! and a Jaguar XJ at the same event... really? An XKR would have atleast had something from the driving orientated sector.

I just dont get these magazine 'reviews' although I take difficulty with actually disagreeing with the outcome of this one.

Lets not forget the GT3 RS at the porsche museum in stuttgart

http://community.evo.co.uk/users/Mo...-Nurburgring-24h-GT3-RS-at-the-Porsche-Museum

The one that chris harris drove at the Nurburgring 24 hours

http://community.evo.co.uk/users/Mo...flecting-on-the-N24---the-GT3-RSs-finest-hour

After being driven round the 'ring it then had some road legal tyres put on. And driven to the porsche museum in stuttgart where it now stays.

13 overall and 4th in SP7 class. 1st place going to a Ferrari 430 GTC (effectively a bespoke Ferrari F430 GT2, not a scuderia / normal 430)

And 2nd and 3rd place in class going to ... GT3 cups

Pretty impressive considering the GT3 was bone stock apart from some race slicks and some safety gubbins i believe.

What exactly has that got to do with anything?

Forgive my ignorance but I assume a GT3 Cup that you state as 2nd and 3rd is not a road spec factory car.

People seem to be missing the point that I and some of the other "Anti" 911 people where saying in the other thread.

It is no surprise that the GT3 RS is a brilliant driver's car, but honestly just how similar is a GT3 RS to a Carrera 2 (SP?).

The GTs and Turbos are still appealing because they are still a little bit bonkers/special/different. An ordinary 911 is just that - Ordinary. I know that they do what they are supposed to fanatically but a 20 year old Jap car is going to get my pulse racing more than yet another modern (996+) Carrera 911 (really, this are as common as muck in and around central London).

I don't ask for people to agree with me, but I at least expect people to accept/understand.

Would still take a 'lesser' Ferrari over a 911 though, I'll take the 'hit' in driveability for teh sexehness every time :p

Closer than you might think. The GT's are sharper and have a more special engine and feel but the 911 C2S is still a stunning road car that has steering that STILL ****** all over anything this side of perhaps an Evora. No Ferrari today can match the braking feel or steering feel of a 911 and while they are not the be all and end all it does make it impossible to say the things are boring for simply they are not if you like driving a car quickly. The fact is that most of the people who call them boring have not been in one let alone driven one because [sneering on]"well why would I, they are boring"[/sneering off] which gets trotted out over and over again when someone gets pulled up on their opinion. Now I appreciate you may well have driven one because of your job and I can see why people wouldn't see them as aesthetically or aurally pleasing (I'd agree lots of better lookers and nice noisers) as some fine Italian nosher but to call the 911 boring is quite frankly laughable even more so when spouted by people so often happy to drive heaps of crap (no inference here Joshy) yet feel able to 'make the call'. Same applies to the NSX in the other thread and also the Integra come to think of it .

As a general point if you SOLE criteria is innovation of outside design or aesthetics then sure call a 911 boring, but don't call yourself a petrol head if thats your only deciding factor. Atom looks like a back of spanners, is that boring too?

I just cant see whats not to like about 180mph and 0-60 in 5 seconds coupled with decent mpg and reasonable servicing.

On top of that its docile round town and an animal once out of it. You can even park them without it being attacked.

In a car that looks superb, never mind that there are a few of them about, people still stop and stare if thats your thing, if you want to make it more so get an aero kit and a sports exhaust.

Or you could have a Honda, right.

Yea but come on, people only buy them because of it's badge, a bloke in a Corsa told me.
