Mondeo ST vs Focus ST - Why such a price difference?

Much faster? Not really - power to weight for example the Focus is 159bhp/tonne versus the Mondeos 149bhp/tonne. The Focus is quicker, but it isnt 'much faster'. 'much faster' is quite a strong phrase which is really inappropriate in this context.

Whats the difference in performance in terms of mid range acceleration though, say from 50-70 or 30-70?

One would expect the torquier delivery of the Focus turbo lump to provide much greater mid range urgency which makes it noticably quicker in 'real world' driving.

Incidentally seeing the figures you posted makes about power to weight ratio for the two cars is making me very keen to get the Mountune 200 kit for my Fiesta ST when they finish it later this year...175bhp per ton anyone? :D

The Focus was £9000 on a 56 plate with 35,000 miles . My trade in value for the ST220 was £4200 with 45,000 miles which is is a 2004/54 car.

I think it's mainly because £9K is a little bit over the odds for a 56 plate ST-2 (normally closer to £8K) and you were trading in your Mondeo which would have got more on the private market.

Yeah, there's is an "image" gap but it's really not as big as you're suggesting.

Well it will certanly make it loud. The engine in the fezzy ST is a disapointment.

Focus ST is 30-70 through the gears 5.6 seconds. I dont know what the figures are for the ST220, but I do have accurate figures from the same test location for the 530i which has a similar power to weight ratio and isn't hugely quicker than a Mondeo ST220 and thats 6.4 seconds, so make of that what you will.

I've already got the Mountune exhaust on my car (well, cat back) and its not that much louder. The problem with the engine as standard is how strangled it is - the airbox is hilariously restricted, and the flexi pipe after the exhaust manifold is bad too. A 60mm exhaust system, apart from the flexi pipe which is 43mm....great :/ One of the few cars where a K&N makes it drive better, apart from just sounding louder. With the Mountune kit (or other aftermarket exhaust system and remap) it revs much more keenly....

No, because the same can be said of any similar hot hatch turbo. Most people don't want a dodgy remap that brakes there car.

Can you provide examples of these dodgy remaps that break Focus STs? Did they take all the t0rks? Oh no, they can't have as that would have made the car faster (maybe as fast as a Honda?!)

I've been running a remap for nearly a year now, and my ST has had a harder life than most (although maintained and looked after properly). I've heard of very few issues with people remapping their ST. In fact, Ford even approve one remap whilst keeping the warranty in tact.

Do we really need an arguement about this? It makes no odds really as tuning potential isnt really the reason for the difference in value here.

Ive seen quite a few VXR and S3 remaps go horribly wrong, with gearbox's often not taking the extra torque.

Yeah but with all that remaped power, you'd still give your left bollock to handle like a DC5, and look like a DC5.

So whats your awesome car in the garage you mentioned a few days ago? Tell me it's a cossie?

I did. I saw things clearly when I was shopping for a new car. I bought a car for half the price of a Focus ST, same performance and it came with more toys including heated leather seats, which wasn't an option in the Focus at that time.

A win in my opinion :)

It is a win, but usually irrational wants come into play for a lot of people, including me. Hence buying a new Focus ST. :D

Corsa VXR remaps are questionable, but then the biggest issue here has been shown to be user abuse. I have no idea about the S3, but these are both irrelevant as these issues do not affect the ST.

If I had the need/desire for a car that handles then I'd buy one (oh wait?), but as it happens, my ST is a road car.

It's not a cossie. I'll give you a clue - it has Lancia stamped on the engine block.

i've had a go in both (and not just up a slip road!), thought they were both great, preferred the st focus, not sure why just did. although the st220 was hardly bad! both great cars!
