Porsche 911: All the same, crap to drive, just crap!

Housey versus Joshy on what makes a great car exciting.

You couldnt make it up.

What on earth are you talking about?

I do not find vanilla 911s exciting in the slightest. This isn't some sort of battle, this is my own personal opinion.

No Housey, I haven't driven a 911 but I can tell you that I probably won't find a 996 C2S exciting without driving one in the same way that I can say that I'll probably think that I'd find a Lada Riva a bit crap without driving one of those.

Did you know that the excitement of driving a car is inversely proportional to the number of cars made?

TROO FAKT

Totally true. The 911 is BORING TO DRIVE because lots of people bought them.

Did you know that if Lotus sold 100,000 Exige S tommorrow, they'd all become dull to drive?

Joshy knows best - he knows what makes an exciting car exciting. Even though he drives at 40mph in 60mph zones holding everyone up for 15 miles because he's scared of his car :p

The only issue I have with comments on the GT-R are from people who have no experience of them and make all sorts of declarations about them without basis.

It's an age thing in the main. When I was a yoof I was absolutely black and white on stuff, convinced one tank was better than another, one fighter plane was the best, one car was simply better in EVERY way than another, you could tell me nothing! I see this so often on web forums and all I can do is put it down to lack of experience of much in life and childish. The fact I see it in some people in their 20's an upwards is disturbing however as by then I was starting to see the other side and being more objective but to see people debating the merits of something for page after page based on at best seeing one in a car park is odd. We can all form an informed opinion based on pulling together data from vast sources but that simply allows us to give a '******* child' interpretation of such a thing. To speak with confidence about something you need to experience it I believe and after that you can give an informed decision and even if I disagree with it, it is at least based on personal experience of your own, not some bloody mish mash of facts turned into an argument to be upheld TO THE DEATH!

Ah, an example that demonstrates my point nicely..

Its a bit like saying "i dont like vegetables. I've never tried them, but if i did i know i wouldnt like them."

Hmmm. It's difficult because often you dont need to try something to know its crap. We've not driven a Skoda Favorit but we know it wont corner like an Elise.

It doesnt really work the other way, though, but its hard to explain why it doesnt.

I drove a Nissan GT-R once and tbh it was crap. I didn't even want it anyway.

That is genuinely not far off the mark...the Pork v Nissan threads on the big US boards are numbingly repetitive and once past name calling, move swiftly on to who has better troops in times of conflict. I find that quickly gets to the nub of which car is better.

Absolutely. If you want to spend all day discrediting a GT-R, a 911 or an NSX, at least come from it with a *balanced* viewpoint, otherwise it's a fan boy trying to blow his trumpet with one ****ed up note. Balanced viewpoint does not mean owning a GT-R and not having driven and been driven in a Porsche and by the same token, owning 20 911's over 30 years does not put you in a position to comment on the GT-R.

I've never driven a 997 GT2. I'd look a proper knob if I started slating it...because my own experience of it is either two things. What I perceive it to be, or what I have read about it.

People who post about any car based on their perception are easy to spot and bring nothing to the thread but discourse.

If you take the other route and if you don't have experience with the car, then you are relying on what is fed to you. If you cannot distinguish proper journalism from maladjusted marque lovers discrediting every other vehicle on the road, that's sad.

Nobody is ever really right in these discussions anyway, but I have a lot more time if you are transparent about where or what you base your opinions on.

but thats because its obvious from the marketing / price point / design its not a car aimed at your demographic.

its automotive white goods.

The 911 is on the other hand, one of the worlds finest sports cars. And i dont think anybody who is a petrolhead / motoring enthusiast would say they arent interested in great sports cars.

Maybe to try it and decide its not their preferred take on the sportscar ? but not to outright reject it without even driving it ...
