Well this replacement car hunting is turning into an epic journey. I saw a small mpv that I never knew existed today: the Seat Altea circa 2005/2006. Could it be the replacement for her old Scenic I'm looking for?

Talk to me about it OcUK... it's a VAG, it's about the right size, it's not an estate car or a 4x4... does it come in a diesel or auto? What's it based on, same sort of thing as the Golf?

Last time I was near a Seat was around 1987, dodgy auto choke and a gearbox made by Porsche, million spoke alloys and boxtastic styling in gloss red :D

It shares a lot of its platform with the Leon, which in turn is a Golf, they do come in diesel flavors, but I've never seen an auto. Some do however come with DSG!

Hmm. Auto has to take precedence, so might have to sacrifice the diesel option then.

Am I right in thinking DSG is paddle change? WTF, why would you want that on a people carrier? It works in full auto though, that's good.

Hmm, prices don't look too bad for an immaculate 3 year old one with reasonable mileage.

Not all DSGs are paddles (pretty sure the altea isn't paddle shift), but all of them are semi-automatic sequential boxes (with a fully automatic setting), simple push pull of the gear level to change gear up/down and no clutch pedal.

Mates brother has just bought one due to their baby being born. Its a diesel, nice inside I thought but within two weeks the turbo went, replaced under warranty, I think its on 16k miles

There is an 'XL' version as well which has bigger boot space. They do appear to be good value as not many have heard about them. Have a look on the Seat forum as there is a section dedicated to them

Good call, cheers Bill :)

Hmm. Someone moaning that they are only getting 47mpg. Others reporting they get around 50mpg including some town driving which is quite attractive. Might be a bit lower for the DSG at around 43mpg but it could just be the way they are being driven.

It's a shame that 14 years of technology progress can't make an auto that is much better than a 1996 petrol Scenic though :(

We have an Altea 1.9 TD 2005 plate, had it from 1yr old and had done about 12k then, its now just over 50k and never had a single problem with it touch wood. Very good all around car imo.
