I am after a 42" Plasma or LCD and a Humax HDR-Fox T2 Freeview HD DVR

Trouble is I need to spend as little as possible, about £1000

The Humax is £329

So that leaves me with £700 ish for a telly and as you guessed i'm mainly going to be watching SD channels

Is there a £700 42" TV that can upscale SD pictures well?

Panasonics plasma range is what you want for SD viewing, the bottom end 720p sets are particularly good for this but with your budget you can probably stretch to a 1080p model and live with the slightly inferior SD picture.

Yeah I was looking at the Panasonic TX - P42G20B but i've not read good things about the SD picture quality.

Currently I have a Panasonic 36" CRT which has a very good picture I just want a bigger screen.

Are Panasonic plasmas about the best for SD viewing then?

Plasma is generally best for SD picture and panasonic make the best plasmas in your price range. SD always looks worse as you up the resolution so genuine 1080p sets like the G20 will struggle when compared to the 720p X20 series.

Panasonic TX-P42S20B

out of all the tvs in currys this had by far the best SD picture and had a very good hd picture. its down to £550 now on jungle site too. bargain!

I've been reading about the problems with plasmas as you say, I really fancy an LED set but I can't seem to find much about their upscaling performance.

I'm probably going to go for a Panasonic Viera TX-L42D25B LCD/LED

Just need to find one on display to have a play with

Where did you read that ?

On the whole however, SD programmes — as long as the source bit-rate was up to par — were a joy to watch on the Panasonic TX-P42G20 thanks to its inky blacks, excellent contrast, accurate colours and decent upscaling.
