Bit early to say but.. 5870 xfire Vs 6870..

What you are after is the next step up from the 5870, which is LIKELY to be called something like the 69xx. Two 5870's will still be quick ass btw, but the 6870 is only about the same speed as a 6870 from all accounts (SO FAR).
 
Yeah the 5870 and the 6870 are not going to be worlds apart in performance. My understanding is that the 69*0 range will be the power house. Do not think they will be released on the 22 Oct with the others. I would like them to but not holding my breath.
 
The 6870 is expected to be slower than then 5870.... But then the Barts based cards (6850\6870) are not the 5850\5870 replacement cards!

They're to replace the 5750\5770 (I reckon 5830 replacements myself, for what that's worth)

For those you need to wait another month or so for the 6950\6970 cards which are powered by the Cayman GPU's.

Whilst I admit the naming change is a little confusing, it's not really that hard to work out....

So, no don't get a 6870's wait for the 5870 replacement cards?
