Hi guys, i have just managed to unlock the 4 cores of my phenom x2 550. Now i have had a issue where i can't detect the temps for the individual cores but i can check the overall temp with everest. It's currently idle at 52 which is obviously hot and i only have a amd stock cooler at the moment.

First thing does it sound like i have 4 decent working cores as i tried playing l4d2 for 10 mins worked fine and ran a test for about 1.5 minutes with prime 95 and all fine. But i stopped it as the temps nearly hit 70 degrees otherwise i would have left it.

Secondly what cooler should i purchase and will i need another internal fan for my case? As i only currently have one fan in my case which sucks air out which is at the back but no fan at the top.

Here is a picture of the inside of of my pc.

I really appreciate all your advice, thanks again!

stock cooler should JUST ABOUT suffice, but forget about overclocking.

Phenoms can be tamed pretty easily. Iver got an unlocked one sitting under a zalman cnps9700 (with the pwm fan from an NT model). Cant really hear it over the case fans unless i shove silly volts through it and run some benchies on it.

I think the akasa venom is the cooler of chioce at the mo.

side note: if that a really bad angle, or does your case (graphics card in particular) have a HELLUVA lot of dust in there? :p

edit: dust has already been pointed out lol. how many fans can you potentially fit to the case, and where?

Just get something cheap-ish. We put an old Freezer64 on my mates unlocked one, after laughing at the stock coolers attempts... :D Was a very good improvement, especially from a cooler that was a good 5 years old. Averaging mid 40's during gaming (before overclocking @ stock 3ghz) .

Coolermaster 212 on this week only, or Arctic Freezer 7?
Both are under £20. :)

Unless the current case fan is really noisy, there's no need for a replacement. However, DO get dusting... :p

Max temps are 62 on the 955 iirc.

Your ambient with the 4890 is going to be quite high as it seems that it does not expel a lot of hot air out of the case. Your cpu is also adding a lot ot the ambient and its efficiency is only going to be crippled by starting at rt. I would reccomend a tower cooler pointing towards the rear of the case. a lot of heatsinks only point up/down on the AMD setups; I think the 212 points can point back/front; i would try and get the plus model.

Ive got the coolermaster 212 on my unlocked 550 and it works really well, have fans spinning at about 15% which is really quiet and temps dont seem to exceed 45 *c

Maybe you can help him with the question then?

Does the AMD kit allow the cooler to be monuted so the airflow is going out the back of the case?
