Porsche 911: All the same, crap to drive, just crap!

BLOODY HELL... listen to that, Boost much? sounds like a harrier. AHEM i mean yeah my skyline sounds like that and beats the lambos init

I love the GT3 RS, especially this new one, I thought the new decals were really naff but have really grown on me, it's just everything I want in a car.

My only small criticism of it is the exhaust note at idle which is just pants...the rest of it just about makes up for that though :p

Not enough pictures in this thread though! Here's a couple of pictures by moi at some no-mark racetracks:

I don't care what it drives like, even 1980's decals weren't as ****ing HIDEOUS as those!

Stickers look better on the dark colours i think.

I wouldnt have them though. Or the coloured wheels and mirrors for that matter.

Quite the opposite actually!

I have an absolutely massive amount of respect for old 911s. Like I mentioned earlier, I grew up flicking through Porsche picture books when I was literally knee high. The sheer awesomeness of old air cooled 911s are more than burned into my mind.

In contrast to what has come before it, the 996 series just doesn't seem that special to me (turbo and RS cars obviously excluded) And don't pretend that I'm alone in thinking that, even the odd 911 buffs turn their noses up at the 996.

See now this to me further reinforces the point that a lot of what is said in threads like this is simply adopting the opinions of other people and presenting them as their own despite having never driven the car.

Honestly you love the 993 but not the 996 because the cooling system changed from air to water....?

Don't know about you but a car tickles many different senses, the sum of which gives you an opinion on a car and how it makes you feel:

1 How the car looks outside
2 How the car looks inside
3 How comfortable the cabin and driving position is
4 The noise of the engine
5 The noise of the exhaust
6 The feel of the steering
7 The feel of braking
8 The feel of the clutch
9 The sensitivity and feel of the accelerator
10 The competance of the suspension, soft, stiff, skittish, crashy etc
11 The stiffness of the chassis
12 The grip
13 The dynamics of the chassis, i.e. prone to under/over steer
etc
etc
etc

So you're basicly dismissing all of the above and ruling out "modern" 911 because they use water to cool the engine instead of good old fashioned air like all the purists think.....right....?

And you call yourself a petrol head?

It's the same problem with smokey, he's drawn the conclusion that 911's don't excite him based on barely points 1-2 above, completely ignoring points 3 to n, which (to a true petrol head) are actually the most important aspects of a car and the points at which P cars are ALL about.

You can form an opinion based on whether the looks of a car excite you or not without driving it, but you can't comment on the whole package until you have driven it how it should be driven.

Never ending argument the air to water one.

Your purists with the beards hate the water cooled, me i love them.

The 996 was the start of decent interiors too, not the scattered mess that was 993.

People moaned about 996 headlights, i never had a problem with those either.

Iv just never in all my life driven cars that were so easy round town yet went so ****ing fast on open road as 996s/997s.

I also think that if you are actually into your driving, not just making a statement then the look of a car is secondary to the way it drives, which is why i cant get my head round people calling them boring when they havent even driven them.

In fact just a test drive is no good, you need a month with one.

Then at the end of that month have a month in a Ferrari, and see how long it takes you to get sick of knocking the suspension out on pot holes, jerking along in town with that paddle jobby and pulling drunk people off your car every time you leave a restaurant.

Thats not to say they are not fantastic cars, they just aint much good day to day.

There is nothing to touch a 911 day to day in my opinion.

Good posts guys. Agree with everything you've said.

I had an "extended" testdrive in a 996 C2 the garage allowed me to have for 2 hours, during that period I formed the opinion that I could indeed do 50 miles a day to work in it without me wanting to get out and kill myself at the end of the week.

I'd love to see if this view held true after a month, but from what I’ve experienced / read I’m in little doubt that my viewpoint would remain unchanged, in truth i really want to try a C4 now.

Amazing cars.

Im 6'4 and i had no problem with them, the only reason i sold my last 997 and got a cayenne was because the unmade road to my house was killing it.

If you dont do anything else car wise in life get yourself one of those. A decent 996 for a year could be free motoring now if you buy the right car to start,, because they aint depreciating much now.

That was my view and one of the reasons i took one out for a drive, however last month i had a testdrive in a C5 Corvette and i'm quite sold on that for my next car, will be a late christmas present to myself but only if a few investments come off.

That’s my main issue with it and won't be something I know the true answer to until I’ve lived with it for a few months, my drive to work is down 25 miles worth of country roads and during quite a large portion of the year i have to overtake tractors and the such.

We shall see, all C5's sell like hotcakes anyways so if i didn't like it i could get shot easy enough, but cheers i too hope it works out, i love how they drive and the noise with a Borla is addictive.

I was thinking the same till this morning, up 57% today on one share giving me a 74% overall gain, if i sold now its enough to pay for half my next car, today has been a fantastic day, i just hope the gains stay for close of play today, interesting to see what it opens on Monday.

Never refuse a profit, cash them :)

I was going to top slice, but i don't want to give up part of my holding, lots of news about digital rights to come out, MM's want them bad and i'm not selling quite yet :)
