Hey guys,

First post on these forums in quite a few years. :) - I'm getting back into the oc scene, but i'm well out of touch with my hardware these days!

So, I'm planning an air cooled build using an i7 950 in an Asus X58 Sabertooth TUF. I'll be happy if I hit 4GHz, but I'm not sure what RAM I'd need to get there. I was looking at 6GB of 2000MHz dominator gt, but I'm fairly sure that's overkill considering the mobo only seems to support 1866MHz.

Spec me? Please?

welcome back to the forums :)

Most of the 1600Mhz will get you to 4Ghz you just have to slacken the timings a little to keep them stable :)

I have some XMP 7-7-7-20's that run at 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24 for 3.8 - 4 Ghz. I'm no expert in this area at all... far from it but.. the set Cmdr andi suggested look good at a good price point as well :)

What does the MB manual suggest in its recommended list as a starting point?

Edit

1 of the OCuK techs was running this MB up until a little while ago. Hopefully he will see this thread and recommend some RAM for you :)

i7 support uptp 1333mhz on paper I have used 1333,1600,2000mhz i i really didt notice any difference in 1600-2000 exept in benching, My advise is get a nice set of 1600mhz ram like the patriots will do 4ghz happy days :)

Just watch out if you intend using a dual radiator cooler such as the Noctua DH-14 as you'll have issues clearing the larger heatsinks on the Patriot memeory.

Thanks for all the replies. The patriot memory looks great for the price.

I don't have the mobo yet, but i grabbed the manual off the Asus site. It lists supported ram as 1866/1800/1600/1333/1066, and the patriot stuff is also listed specifically in the qualified vendor list so I guess I can't go wrong with that.

In that case, can anyone recommend a cooler that will handle the temps i'm likely to get, clear the patriot heatsinks, and fit nicely in an Antec P182? :)
