Porsche 911: All the same, crap to drive, just crap!

Thats entirely how your posts come across, and the reason why everybody is having a go at you.

There may be many things you dont like about the 911, one of them is not that its a boring car to drive. Which is again, why everybody is picking fault with you.

Your allowed not to like a car, and to give reasons why you dislike it, but to say its a boring car to drive implies just that - that its some kind of posing cruise mobile thats boring to drive.

I have not once said that a 911 is a boring car to drive.

Stop putting words in my mouth.

Come off it !!!

What on earth are you talking about?

I do not find vanilla 911s exciting in the slightest. This isn't some sort of battle, this is my own personal opinion.

No Housey, I haven't driven a 911 but I can tell you that I probably won't find a 996 C2S exciting without driving one in the same way that I can say that I'll probably think that I'd find a Lada Riva a bit crap without driving one of those.

Come off it !!!

Are we reading some sort of different post to each other? Where exactly does that say "They are boring to drive"? Nowhere?

I said that to me they don't convey a sense of excitement to ME because they aren't MY sort of car.

Do you know I don't think I know anyone who has driven a modern 911, Boxster or Cayman and not thought it was an amazing car to drive, myself included. Plenty of them didn't think it would be their cup of tea, but not one failed to come out of the car with a smile on their face. I can't be bothered to go through every page on this thread, but has anyone expressed the opinion of having driven one and thought, "Nah, not for me, didn't get on with it"?

Even still, the point still stands, what is it that you dont like about them. What is it about the 911 that makes it not your sort of car.

Is it that the 911 is just a jumped up VW Beetle ? The fact that the styling is so conservative and the porsche designers are often joked to be the laziest designers in the industry ? or is the technical aspect, that having the engine in the rear is "wrong" ?

Can we perhaps just drop this now? We seem to be going in circles over and over and over again. I do not like them.

It seems that some of you are pushing for a sound-bite of the traditional 911 hating crap so you all have permission to go to town and flame me. This is not going to happen because I don't believe that it is a big beetle, or is the same car from 1964 with a facelift, or the engine is in the wrong place. None of those oh-so simple answers would explain why a 930 series 911 is an immensely desirable car to me but a 996 isn't.

I just don't like them.

I do not hate them, neither do I question their abilities on the road, but they are a car that I have absoultely no desire to own whatsoever.

I think it must just be a "one of those things" job with Joshy.

A bit like me and Lexus / Audi. Much more so Lexus, i just hate those cars, i dont know why and i have driven a few.

Audi i dont know why either they just seem a bit bland, but i would still have the right one i suppose unlike a Lexus, which i just wouldnt have full stop.

Thats not a dig at your car Josh, im talking about the big 4 door ones.

.

Its all become clear, Josh is a beardy pipe smoking air cooled purist, theres 1000s of them on Porsche forums! :D

I think that is more of a coincidence than anything else. I'm weird and like old cars. "Modern" stuff has to have a pretty big trick up it's sleeve to make me think "I want that".

It's not just a 911 thing. Hand on heart I'd rather have a mint E34 M5 than a e60 M5. Or an E30 M3 over a E92. Or a "Hammer" era AMG Merc to it's modern equivalent. RS4 Audi? No thanks, I'd rather have a SWB (or LWB for that matter) old Quattro

I can appreciate all day long that the newer cars may be far superior in every measurable way but I just prefer the oldies. Maybe it is because I was born after my time :(.

Iv gone the other way, i love older cars too, but i just cant put up with them every day any more.

Rubbish air con, auto boxes with not enough gears.

The problem is Joshy is that if you are not prepared to support an opinion, it becomes utterly worthless and pointless voicing that opinion. I simply dont buy the fact you are unable to explain, the fact you cannot explain means there is no real reason to dislike the 911, you just dislike it based on irrational prejudice.

So I shall ask again. What do you like about a car that is missing from the 911 yet present in a car suhc as the Toyota Soarer?

We'll have to leave it at that then :).

So stand by them - what use an opinion you won't support?

What do you like about a car that is missing from the 911 yet present in a car such as the Toyota Soarer?

It's not a difficult question Joshy - if it is perhaps you shouldnt make comments you refuse to back up. I can explain to you why I dislike every car I dislike, it's not exactly a tall order to expect similar from anyone else.

I've read the thread with some interest but just to check - is there absolutely no room for intangibles in your views on cars? Nothing about personal preference at all? Let's use the analogy of how people select a partner - it's not quite the same but it's close enough to do here. Some people like their partner slim, others a bit chunkier, some prefer blondes, others brunettes, some redheads, some want sporty, others want someone who will look classy on their arm and has impeccable manners but the principle point is that people like different things and for different reasons, they might turn down someone who appears to meet all criteria but it just doesn't quite "click" in some indefinable way.

For what it is worth I reckon that 911s (pretty much any of them) are brilliant cars that I'd happily own in a second if doing so wasn't going to negatively impact my chance to do something else I wanted but that's based on nothing more than looking at some in the metal and hearing/seeing them go. Simply put they seem to be cars that are extremely good at what they do but I can understand that not everyone will like them, their loss perhaps but also their choice.
