How do you stop motherboards shorting on the chassis?

Hi all,

After a lot of troubleshooting on my previous thread I've drawn the conclusion that my problems are due to either motherboard shorting out or psu issues.

I'm going to take the board out of the chassis and see if it wants to play ball before I go forking out for a new psu or sending the old one back, as it's still under warranty (be quiet dark power pro 650w).

Motherboard is gigabyte g41m-es2h, and the problems is that it won't post. When it does, it then boots but after about 45mins to an hour it loses video signal and back panel USB signal.

All drives and fans are still spinning, and spin up at startup.

It did this on my asus p5q deluxe and I thought that the gpu had died, so I bought the micro atx gigabyte board to tide me over.

If this don't work Im at a loss. I'd rather buy a mac than pay someone else for a readybuilt! (apart from ocuk of course! :D)

umm ... i guess make sure the standoffs are all screwed in nice and tight, if you're really pedantic/paranoid you could try finding some small rubber/plastic washersto sit beteen the motherboard and the standoffs. Make sure theres no bending on either the board itself or the motherboard tray.

thats all i can think of at the mo.

You would rather pay twice the price for the components than pay OcUK a little bit more to get what you want?

Crazy . . . . :p

As you say, build outside the case first. The standoffs should only be where the holes are!

Oh god no! I'm saying I wouldn't be trusting enough of anyone other than ocuk and a couple of others with a big money purchase!

Check you haven't got any standoffs installed in the wrong place. I've seen these short out boards before. I've also seen people install mb's with no standoffs!

Tested it all free of the case and also tested my p5q deluxe also.

I put a basic psu tester on the psu afterwards. It showed no power to the 5v SB pin and no power to the PG pin. Maybe this is the root of my problem as all the other power rails all are fine, just the 24pin showing issues.

Pastymuncher, it's a Be Quiet Darkpower pro 650.

It's only a year old so I'm really surprised that it's done this. I'm going to return it and probably stick to seasonic/corsair in future as I know the seasonic stuff is bullet proof.

Annoyingly its the cost in system down time rather than the cost of the psu itself.
