As me and the other one were sat eating our Friday night chinkie, we had an interesting discussion - what makes a spare rib 'spare' and what happens to the ribs that aren't spare?

Enlighten me GD, why do we call them 'spare' ribs?

So racist.

They are the pikeyest cut from that part of the animal so probably at one point they were considered spare/unwanted... lol who knows.

The word 'spareribs' is an English alteration of the German 'ribbesper' which refers to the idea of pork ribs roasted on a spear.

There is also the "absence of fat" which, in 1596, the usuage of 'spare' came about in association to pork ribs.

Plagiarised.

It isn't. Chippie refers to the product, chinkie refers to the country of origin which some sensitive types might find offensive.

i really appreciate you calling it a chinkie

Here in the UK we call a Chinese meal a chinkie, we don't mean anything racist by it, it's just a shortened term that everyone here understands, please don't think that I was being racist as I am not a racist.

Nah, a chinkie doesn't refer to the country, it referes to what's on my plate :D My chinkie chips, spicey beef and spare ribs don't take offence at me calling them a chinkie :p

Maybe SpeedFreak actually appreciates you calling it a chinkie? Perhaps he's glad you're not a PC freak who shies from using colloquial slang on the premise that it may offend the socially inept who crave any lapse of etiquette upon which they can found their moral high ground?

Don't tarnish the rest of us with your scummy racist brush.

Most of us just call it "A Chinese".

OK, maybe I should have put 'some of us' so as not to offend you 'better' types of the OcUK forums, maybe it depends where you're from, if using the term chinkie is racist then I guess I am a racist afterall and if you take offence then, tough boobies :D

Hang on he may have a point. The dead fish I was eating the other night may have taken double offence both at me calling it a Duck and at my referencing its Indian Origins in coming from Bombay............

Sorry fish, no offence intended :o;):p
