Not really the same thing is it? Different subjects of news i.e Economics, Business, Technology, Sport, Foreign affairs interest different people. Then the article of news attracts debate and discussion surrounding the subject. You can get 11+ pages of discussion of news regarding the Chilean rescue mission or tax increases with people all chipping in there views and knowledge. You won't get pages and pages of discussion regarding a joke. If there's a YouTube thread and post a Picture thread I can't see why a joke thread wouldn't be a good idea.

Relationship threads attract several responses and questions directly to the OP. Joke threads do not.
