It's that time of the year when autumn is upon us, the tree's start to drop their leaves, winds are coming in, winter clothing is being brought out of the wardrobe to be worn and yes the worst part it's the god damn flu season!!!
Some of my colleagues had the flu last month and I was fine. They got over it within a week or two and I was still fine so everything was great.
Annoyingly I caught the bugger on Thursday. So I'm sat here ill as, throat is killing me, chesty cough, headache, hot and cold and the worst part blocked nose.
I've taken some paracetamol and lots of fluids. Any one out there got any good suggestions or flu remedies for the infected?

Cheers people!

sounds silly but sometimes i've found kicking up a sweat by exercising can help beat off the flu quicker. also use lemon and honey with boilin water or use boiled water in a bowl with a towel over your head to clear the nose (of snots)

Do you have to do this every time you have a blocked nose or does it clear it up altogether? Also how long for?

I've heard of that but never done it before.

I never take anything other than aspirin (if throat is sore enough to warrant), vitamin C tablets and hot chocolate (with spoon of honey after if possible!).

I avoid those throat lozenges with antiseptic effect, I tend to think they will inhibit your immune response more than anything. May not be true, but I've observed very long lasting sore throats in people who've used them and of course there's a lot of money to be made out of cold remedies! You need to swallow at least a little bit of your mucus to clear your sore throat, don't let it get into your chest though. Sore throat should clear within 48hrs really.

Probably most importantly, eat well. Vitamin C is essential for your immune system but of course it's far more complex than that and you need a full profile of vitamins and minerals for it to work effectively. People I think are tempted to eat badly when ill as they don't want to cook (order takeaways etc), but try to cook some frozen peas or broccolli, that's not hard. Hazelnuts are also good to include and some meats and eggs. Don't be afraid to eat lots when you have a cold, just not too much fatty foods and dairy.

Allow yourself to rest, take time off work if you can. You'll need good sleep, which is hard to get with a stuffed up nose, so it's very helpful if you're able to nap during the day to make up the hours.

The boiling water trick can loosen up mucus. You may use olbas oil in the water too. It'll be quite temporary though as you'll keep producing it for a few days.

Sounds like you have a cold (man flu) rather than flu.

Lol, whenever i hear that a guy complains that he has 'man flu' im sorry but i have no sympathy for him. There is no such thing as man flu, its just the normal bog standard flu that everyone else gets.

best thing to do is wrap up really warm so that you can sweat it out and have lots of tissues and drink plenty of fluids. You will start to feel better by the next day or two. :)

Potters Catarrh Pastilles for the throat/cough. Lemsip* for the rest.

Definitely sounds like man flu though. Sympathy denied since I've had it this week too and mostly got on with it (did have one day of feeling sorry for myself but normally I'd have 2-3).

* You can do the same job much cheaper by mixing the ingredients yourself, but I don't have a problem with paying someone else to do that.

You cant cure it, only reduce the symptoms.

So get over it! Let your immune system fight it. Sleep, rest, eat and drink plenty. Thats the best you can do.

Placebo.
The Cold Research Centre proved it did nothing.

I had my flu & swine flu jab on thursday.

Vitamin C is definitely essential in humans as we can't produce it on our own and it is proven to play a role in the immune system. What is unproven is whether an excessive dose (ie, the tablets containing 1000% RDA+) actually gives any additional boost. It is a convenient and cheap way to ensure you get enough anyhow, I know I get enough from my diet and a glass of OJ in the morning is normally sufficient if nothing else, but not everyone does.

Where did you get your flu jabs? I might just go for one, being at uni means you're exposed to just about everything going!

Lemsips, beachams powders normally rise your temp and help to 'sweat it out'

Plenty of Vitamin C and water.

If you had the real flu, you would have fluids coming out of every hole at the same time lol
