One of life's many mysteries?

Also, why would sperm in the eye result in needing an eye patch? Would an eye wash not be enough? It's not exactly sulfuric acid

Maybe it's magically crystal charged sperm?

I'm eating food that (alledgedly) comes from China, this is what I refer to when I say the word 'chinkie', that it comes from China, not that it was cooked by a Chinese person.

Irrelevant. The term is racist slang, YOU personally may use it for the food, but everyone else knows it is racist slang about Chinese people.

Niggie freid chicken and some water mellon oh Lordy!

Thats what we call it round here.

Im going to guess you are very young, therefore you learnt the racist slant from your elders, shame on them.

Not irrelevant at all. It's all about the context. I was referring to food, it was clear that I was referring to food. The people who chose to take offense at it took it out of the context of food themselves. I can't help that.

Here in the UK we call a Chinese meal a chinkie, we don't mean anything racist by it, it's just a shortened term that everyone here understands, please don't think that I was being racist as I am not a racist.

To be fair, that's not true. I've never heard it called that before. Everyone I know calls it "a Chinese" as stated.

Still, I found it funny.

Ok, from here on in lets just assume that I said the word 'sometimes' between 'we' and 'call'.

It really is irrelevant to the grand scheme of things wouldn't you say? One or two people have also said that they use the term 'chinkie', obviously I don't think that every single sole in the UK uses this term.:p

Yes, but you know how on this forum people love to pick holes. Makes them feel good about something.

Oh I certainly do, don't get me wrong, apart from the very serious fact that I now know why we call spare ribs 'spare', I'm taking this with a huge pinch of salt. :p

I love some of the replies this got though, really unexpected from a thread about spare ribs, highly entertaining. :D

The guy that used to run the corner shop, was called Harry, and the guy that ran it before him, was called Harry, and so was the guy that ran it before him.

At the moment, its run by four different guys, they're not called harry, but give it a few years, and they too will be called harry..

As for 'chinkies', that's a term I didn't even hear of until my mid teens, and I cannot say that I have ever used it. That being said, I suppose it is easier than just calling people a bunch of 'slitty eyed' *insert insult here*.

It is one of those troublesome words that has entered our language as both the term for a style of food, and as a racist slur, unfortunate, but true.

This isn't a pointless exercise in pedantism though, this could actually stop the OP being killed! I hear from another GD thread that China is just looking for an excuse to invade Britain!

Oh, now you've got me worried  ****! :D

Yes, I think it states that I'm not afraid to say or use the words that I want to. In this case I'm obviously not intending it to be racist, but I can't help if someone takes offense, that's up to them.

I personally don't understand why people would think you were racist. I mean all you are doing is using a word that is considered a racial slur and that you know is considered a racial slur...

People can think what they want, I didn't intend to cause insult, I just asked why ribs are referred to as 'spare'. :D

Thread HJ made this more interesting....

Reminds me of when my friend was in the 'chinese takeaway' on her mobile and said 'I'm just in the chinkie at the moment'. They threw her out!

We sometimes use the word around our way to describe (food from) the local takeaway and it's not intended to be racist. Although, clearly, the owners thought otherwise.

In defense of the OP, if you were a true racist, then you wouldn't be eating food cooked by the people you were racist about now would you?!

And vice versa most people I know call it a chinky and do so because it's short for chinese meal, infact I think most of those people wouldn't even know it was also racist slang.
