Hi guys,

I'm moving to my new flat in croydon which is in zone 4. My work is in hammersmith (zone 2) and i intend on getting the overground/underground to work.

My question is will i need a zone 1-4 travel card or will a zone 2-4 be enough? Reason i ask is I will need to cross through zone 1 to get to my work even though i won't be touching out at any zone 1 stations.

Hope this make sense

If you're going through zone 1 (or indeed any zone) then there's the potential for a ticket inspector to catch you for not having the correct ticket - if you're not getting off during the trip then the odds are reduced but whether it's worth the risk is up to you.

I use a Zone 2-4 card myself and never have any issues passing or stopping off in a zone 1 station but then i would suggest you get an oyster card and put £10 onto it to cover you...should you need to stop off in zone1...it will automatically deduct the fare from your oyster card...your oyster card will also keep your weekly or monthly travelcard as well....its what i use.

As Spawn said, buy an Oyster Card and put £10 on it as once i gets to the cost of a day Travelcard it will stop taking money but you will still be able to journey with it, makes it so much easier, plus there isn't the hassle of a ticket, as they ca e lost easier.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll stick with the zones 2-4 travel card and have an additional £10 on my oyster just in case:D

More to the point, could you not find any worse places to live and work? :p

I think East Croydon is in zone 4. I have the displeasure of using that station every day.

heh, I see where you're coming from, but the poor lad's just moved into his new flat. Aren't you a nice guy :p

Croydon -> Clapham Junction -> Barons Court -> Hammersmith. Will avoid zone 1.

How on earth does he get from Clapham Junction to Barons Court? Kensington Olympia or West Brompton would add 20 mins walking time to his journey. Unless I'm missing something.

OP, use an Oyster card and all will be well.

He could be in Crawley :p

Also East Croydon Station last year had 365 reported muggings on the platforms if I recall correctly. I like to think that the muggers have an agreement to only do one a day between them all.

Saying all this, i lived in Addiscombe (15 min walk from east croydon station) for 24 years and it never did me any harm that couldn't be cured by a professional. (I am joking, i never had a problem living in croydon for 24 years.)

I've witnessed a fairly severe beating happen on the tram platform that another member of the public broke up and I've had various unpleasant people try to start fights with me as I exit the station. I've only been using the station for about a year too :p

I didn't mean Barons Court! Earl's Court (or West Brompton - I forget) on the overground.

Me either. I thought the last few words would be seen as a joke though in hindsight i can see why you may have thought i was being serious.

I only moved out of Croydon when I moved in with the wife but in all my 24 years there I never had a problem with anyone. True enough I'm not the friday/saturday night clubber type so thats a large chunk of the croydon experience that i've never had to be exposed to.

Born and bred in croydon and it was a great place to grow up in but now it's a bit of a dump plus the place is soooooooooo grey

Only good thing about the place is getting some fresh air and having a walk round parkhill or Beddington park

Ps fingers crossed one day i can move to Guildford
