So looking at getting a NAS in ages and now is the time where im cclearout everything in the house and shall be looking into a new place to live with my partner and when we move i would like to have a NAs where i can share FILMS/MUSIC/FILES to mine and her pc/latop and also stream the media to the ps3 that shall be in the living room and bedroom.

Looking at reviews i have come to like

with
2x http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-097-SA&groupid=1657&catid=1660&subcat=1665

Now should i play it safe and use RAID 1 or just use the whole 4tb of space tho i think 2tb shall sufice for now but i dunno about later on and i wanna try avoid having a home build pc for a media server.

Personally I would have them in RAID1, just in case. Although I guess if you have a bluray burner and can backup some of the most important data that you will keep on there, then you can risk using JBOD with two disks (or one then add one later).

That nas unit ia top notch, highly recomended! I agree with above.. Raid 1 for now ia certainly the safest bet and 2tb is plenty of space.

A good choice and good combination of the two products.

The 210j is Synology's entry level 2 bay NAS and has acceptable performance for it's price

To max out its transfer speeds you would need to be using a gigabit network connection

If using wireless or 100Mbit, your network will be the limiting factor for speeds not the 210j

All NAS models with similar hardware to the 210j will not give you super, super fast file transfers as their hardware specs will limit this

But as I said at the start, for the price, the performance is acceptable, if you want more speed you will have go to the higher models (210+ or 710+, but there is a big price hike)

£163.99 for a NAS with no HDD? Sorry but thats just rubbish, I'd rather get an old P3 from the local paper for next to nothing and put in a decent RAID card and Nics. For that price you could could build a machine with storage which will offer a lot more.

Power usage, size, noise, effort & convenience.

Indeed, I've gone from a full blown PC server to a NAS, and been amazed at the performance to power consumption.. which over a year is quite massive..

But regarding the 210j, I'd rather go for the QNAP TS210, it's basically the same hardware (same 800Mhz processor), but double the RAM (256Mb).. and comes in at £170~, and if the TS110 is anything to go by (Same spec, just 1 HDD Bay), it's better performing at writing, and has the same read performance.

And in a 2 bay device, I went for no RAID, but do backup all documents/photo's/Music to an external 1TB USB drive plugged in (I've set it up as an automatic backup).
