I've been putting off making a call to a guy called Xianji because I have no idea how to pronounce the name. Anyone know how to say it?

Its not possible to know for sure without looking at the actual Chinese characters. And even then it'll be hard to express it in English, I mean afterall the closet english pronunciation is "xiangji". I say just call him up, and if he's resonable he'll understand :)

Just do what i do and if you cant pronounce the name, don't say it at all! lol

'Hi there its Steve calling from blah blah blah', 'good morning Sir, its Steve from'

etc.

Or you could just come out and be honest with the guy. 'Sorry sir can you pronounce your surname to me, i want to make sure i know how to pronounce it properly for future correspondence'.

OR

If you need to ask for him, or be put through, just ask whoever it is you speak to?

If he's a decent guy he should understand that his name will be hard for you to pronounce, and probably have a laugh about it.

This. Just ask the guy and if he's a good fella, he shouldn't mind. Saves you from looking a right idiot if you end up pronouncing it wrong. :p

I know I could do that, but I don't like to be culturally ignorant. This way I actually learn how to say it properly.
