On Demand Video Streaming Comming to the PS3. £5.99 / month (Think Netflix)

as many times as you like? No, £5.99 only gets you 2 hours a month of streaming, you need to be paying £9.99+ a month for unlimited. Also unless they seriously jack up the bandwidth they aren't worth watching on a large TV. The current streams are 800kbps and look terrible.

What would be exciting is if Netflix launched in the UK.

was going by this

Lovefilm's £5.99 subscription or above, let them stream away without a care in the world.

Evidently not :/ Cheapest unlimited streaming package is £9.99 which is a bit of a con.

Heres hoping they have a major redevelopment in the current stream, people with PS3s are bound to be watching on 40"-50" screens that will make a 800kbs stream look awful.

I didn't realise you could already stream films to media centre computers. I have a pc and a ps3, was tempted to build a media centre pc and sell the ps3 as I just don't use it. Your information about streaming to media centre is very interesting, please do tell me how!

Thanks

Not amazing apparently

you can get love frilm free trials all over the net (google it) get one and give it a try for yourself.

Just tried it out on my 15'' laptop... Horrible quality, can only imagine how bad it would look on my 46'' plasma.

Need to up the resolution for sure.

Hey,

What sort of net connection would you need to stream a hd movie though?

And thats why it isnt going to happen.

With my 7mbps connection totally maxxed via usenet a 4.5GB file takes around 2h to download (this would be approx equivalent to a 720p stream) so you'd have a lot of buffering and i dont think their infrastructure would be able to feed everyones pipes.

Well I've got digital video files in 720p which look excellent on my 46'' TV, 1.21 GB. 40 min video lenght.

I'm on BT's up to 20 mbit/s or whatever it is, get download speeds of up 3.5 MB/s. But as long as you get 1.21*1024GB/(40*60) = 0.52 MB per second download speed it should be feasible to stream 720p files directly, less even if you're prepared to let it buffer for a bit before starting to watch.

Yeah but a 4.5GB file surely is like 2 hours long? So assuming constant speed you should be able to stream directly, or just let it buffer for a minute?

Agree about the point about their service though, might be a while away from a large scale supply of this.

Hi,

Theory says then, with a 22meg connection usually being able to average 1.6MB/s I should be able to stream 720p?

Definitely, as I said 0.52 MB/s should be enough for instant streaming if the 40 min video is 1.21 GB.

But as always, depends on the file size. I mean, all it depends on is you downloading as fast as the video runs. Bam0 mentioned the current bitstreams are 800 kbps = 100 kb/s, so they need to roughly 5 times that to get 720p... Shows how bad the current quality is.

And to stream 720p you only need 0.52 MB/s download speed, so you need say at least 4 mbps broadband at least to stream with minimal buffering. Something that shouldn't be that hard to get for a lot of people, and that should start reaching more and more people in the years to come.

I hope they at least will start offering 720p movies for the people who actually got a half decent internet connection. 800kbps is abysmal.

Hey,

I always thought that the idea of the streaming movies to be a good one, I mean who knows - in years to come maybe we'll see the end of the cinema with movies streamed to homes around the world? A possibility per chance?

as BT infinity start to roll out fibre optic broadband to all, its going to happen. Just a shame that currently they feel the need to supply crap quality, leaving those us with cutting edge 50 Mb virgin connections watching rubbish :(

I can quite happily get 5.5 MB/S and upwards if the suppliers webservers are up to it.

Nice idea, but as most net suppliers cap their bandwidth, it makes a bit of a mockery of the idea. A full on BD film would probably use a whole months typical allowance.

I just don't see that our present network infrastructure could possible support a lot of that.

Hi,

You have a fair point there, I guess streaming that amount of data would be insane for the network traffic, still food for thought though! I'd far rather sit on my own sofa than a stained seat in a smelly room! :)

Yeah, certainly. I find though that my net connection drops off terribly in the evening, or at random times or days so that is a theoretical maximum. I tried watching spooks on iplayer last week and whilst i get those speeds from usenet iplayer needed to stream for a good 5-10mins for a 1h show to play without pauses. Up the quality, and double the length and it would have to be buffering for 30mins or more, something i wouldnt be willing to wait for. I am on the phone to O2 about my bband though.
