What are your roots?

No idea though apparently my last name goes back to france some way back, no idea how far back that is though

My father originates from the island of Antigua, supposedly we have some minor Scottish noble blood in us, randy plantation owners and all that, plus the usual mix of Portuguese, Arawak, Carib and African. My mother is from an old Gloucestershire family.

Born in LA, moved to the U.K when i was 1, lived in birmingham until i was 10 and then moved to redditch.

God knows about any of my past.

Do you have to pay to use Ancestry?

Essex born & bred. Though my dad's side of the family are from Suffolk, going back a few generations AFAIK were mostly farm workers. My Surname is from a couple of Villages in Dorset & Bedfordshire (No idea which one was where my descendants lived, I would have said Beds as its nearer) There other people who have a similar Surname to mine, This slight changes to the Surname is due to illiteracy (misspelling of the Surname when Censuses were being conducted, probably when they started in the 19th Century)

Mum's side of the Family comes from Cambridgeshire, Though She's not really that interested in her family history.

I was born in Kent, my mum in Coventry, her parents come from the Punjab in India. My dad is also from the Punjab in India as are his parents. My grandad does that thing where he says his name then says "son of ... who was the son of...etc" He can go back a few generations.

Past that I don't know if my family have been in that area for hundreds of years, though I doubt it, as my surname is quite rare and the only other place I've seen it mentioned, beside a few random people, is in reference to a guy mentioned in the Quran.

I don't mention that bit to my grandad as the family is Sikh and those two religions have a very bloody history.

Kent boy here, me mam's Irish (proper Irish, not NI) .

Lol. "Proper Irish" - So if your born on a part of the island of Ireland your not Irish?

Ulster Scots I guess. On my Dad's side, family must have been put in over here from Scotland during the plantations. Not too sure regarding my mum's!

British Born Ukrainian.

Both sets of Grandparents were taken by the Germans in WW2 and forced to work. After WW2, Ukraine was just a lump of mess economically so they had the option of coming to the UK or Canada. I would have chosen the latter. :p

Have a couple of cousins in Ukraine, but also found out 2 years ago that we had some long lost cousins. With such a rare surname, found them on Facebook and we just traced back family history to find out that our great great grandfathers were brothers, so have some cousins in Chicago too. :)

Whats a good site to trace your family tree\herritage?

I've googled already and seen a few, just wondered if any of you have used one and it's been any good.

I'd really like to know about my ancestors! As I havent a clue about much other than my grandparents.

My surname is German, BUT, I know of no connection to germany in my actual past.

Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England. English dad, English mum. My grandmother on my dads side was from Sunderland. but the rest of my grandparents were yorkshire based.

I do have family in america, but they emigrated from Yorkshire to Minneapolis. So that's of no importance really.

Parents are English, family on my dads side was affluent Austrians/Austro-hungarian empire.

Mums side is welsh.

I was born in scotland.

I'm British born and bred London/Surrey area, now starting an American branch of skids. Family tree stems from the Med.. French / Italian.. All my family live in the South of France & Corsica. Family tree goes back to Malta & Sicily AND my uncle who's well into all this stuff had traced the family back all the way back to the Roman Empire, and my surname originally had 'Von' prefixing it, saying Knight of the Roman Empire....

Mums side are from the South West (exact area varies with generation). Dad was from Boston and his Grandmother was Blackfoot Tribe.

Irish.
born in Ireland. moved here when i was 15. now 37
also grandparents on mums side were irish travellers.

All I know is my name is Austrian Jewish, I don't know anything else but that. I keep meaning to look into it but I never get around to it.

Same here, parents Austrian, then it splits off into Polish/Czech and then I don't know.
Very hard to get information on genealogy going past my grand parents.
