Where does an SSD slot into

Never had one before. Where do they slot into in your typical case? Pictures of them don't look like they fit in a normal hard drive slot.

Most SSDs are 2.5'' (same size as laptop hard disks), and most cases only feature mounts for standard 3.5'' desktop hard disks. So you either need to buy a converter kit (includes brackets and screws) or just rest the SSD on something. Mine sits on the bottom of my case.

Well for a start, the OCZ vertex 2 bigfoot drives are 3.5in and cheaper than their 2.5in equivalents, and won't require an adapter.

Depends which SSD you get also, I know mine came with an adapter so I could put it in a normal HDD bay. But they have no moving parts or get hot so really you can put them anywhere in the case.

I have one of these drives for my OS (you can click the link in my sig to see). It will make your system boot times much snappier. I run Win64 Home Premium on it. I only use it for drivers and any future windows updates. Still have 7gb spare for them which is plenty.

Sorry to raise this again. But one final question on SSDs. If your machine is always on sandby, like mine, it restarts pretty quickly. is there still a case for having an SSD running the OS?

You can, I have disabled hibernation mainly due to the low SSD size but use standby periodically.

It should still load problems a lot quicker than nearly any mechanical drive at the very least

Depending on your case, they can also be mounted in 5.25" bays, 4 drives to each bay.

I presume you mean "programs" . Still, only if I load them onto the SSD, and I was thinking of getting one only for the OS.
