Hi all,

Basically i was in work the other night, Turned on the Assistant managers Monitors to log in myself and they were still logged in with their email open, An email that i sent them was highlighted and in the preview pane had the Manager forwarding it to the assistant manager basically calling me a charmless idiot, i looked into his reply and he replied "LAZY ****".

I must admit this offended me as the email they were replying to was basically warning them of a possible customer service issue and a way they could minimize it in the future, It was light hearted, These are not my managers but managers of one of the branches i cover OOH.

I would love to do something about this but not sure where i stand, Seeing the initial "CHARMLESS IDIOT" email in the preview pane was unavoidable but then looking at his reply mean i was looking at his email.

I know some of you are probably just going to tell me to suck it up but i do not think adults (probably 25 years old) should be doing this, I have googled and find nothing.

Why dont you complain to your boss or someone in HR about it...thats if you have a HR dept or a boss??.

If it bothers you that much and if it was me, it would then id want to take it further.

You should have forwarded the email onto yourself. Then confronted him about saying firstly way are you saying this behind my back without talking in through with me first, then secondly why are you stupid enough to forward it on to me.

Give me pay raise and keep out of my way or I forward onto HR.

I would file a grievance and raise a security issue about him not logging off his workstation - depends on local requirements.

You probably don't want to admit to reading other employees personal emails, whether they left themselves logged into the system or not.

In the same way as you don't act on other peoples mail if you open it after receiving it at your address, even if it contains something which may directly affect you, it was intended for the addressee only.

This is especially true within a commercial environment.

If you do wish to act, work out why they think what they do and counter it without letting on you got a heads up. Is it purely personal malice on their part or was it something to do with the way you worded your email?

Just tell your boss he left his computer on in a friendly manner, finish with, "you should probably take more care to log off, you lazy ****".

Why dont you just drop in the odd "you know me im a charmless idiot", he will get paranoid thinking you and the boss are taking the pee out of him and you can pee yourself with laughter at that pathetic *****.

lots of people are nasty about other people normally behind there backs ,like the above says , i would just ignore it after all you were not meant to read it

Actually, I like these.

Makes it kind of hard to work with someone you know think so badly of you.

Since when can people not have private conversations?
The problem here is you reading other peoples email. It's just the electronic version of a chat around the water cooler.

They don't like you, get over it?

The IT policy will (usually) state that using the company network to communicate such remarks or similar is against company policy.

You could raise this issue (the fact that the screen was unlocked and unsecured and your name on screen stood out and that's how you saw the email).

File a complaint, Start with the fact they didn't log their system off, and move onto the fact emails between the assistant manager and manager were on screen and they were essentially bad mouthing you behind your back.

Do not say you looked through any emails. Simply put, You moved the mouse and the messages were there infront of your face.

don't be a charmless idiot

And do some work rather than snooping on peoples email, that way you will not be a "LAZY ****".

problem solved...

Thanks for the responses guys, The worse thing was it was the Branch manager who insitially Said i was a charmless idiot in which the Assistant replaied "LAZY ****" so they are both involved, I have taken offence to it esspecially as neither of them actually work with me and i only see them maybe once a month, The initial email from me was friendly but proffesional, ending in the words "hopefully i have turned the customer around with my charm :D".

The only thing in the employee handbook about reading employee's emails is........

"Employees are prohibited from using other
individuals’ access codes to gain access to those
individuals’ e-mail and voicemail messages or any
other programmes without express authorisation
or permission."

It only has about access codes, I did not need access codes as all was logged in and the first thing i saw on the screen, they always leave themselves logged in and i normally just log them out straight away.

I have always said to them if they have any issue's with me or the team i work in to call me, they all have my number. It just makes me feel like a bit of an wolly, I am always polite to them in emails and in person and neither of them have a reason to dislike me.

will it? ours doesnt..

So yours doesn't say that misuse of the company network isn't allowed?

Because comversations like the one the Op noticed are private and not company business so therefore it is a misuse of company equipment.
