Yep, it's that time of year again, and once again I'm confused.

Despite no claims/convictions/changes to details, my car insurance has gone up for the 2nd year running .

2 years ago we were paying just over £200 (fully comp, legal protection, guaranteed hire car). Last year the price went up to £230 (same insurer, best price I could find). This year it's £270 with my current insurer, and I can't even get a quote close to that, let alone better.

Is everyone having the same problems, or did I just have "MUG" tattooed across my forehead?

If you are going off the renewal letter and accepting the increase on that letter you have "MUG" tattooed on your forehead

Please shop around, there is no insentive to stick with the same company if its down to just cost

However, car insurance is on the up currently, especially for younger drivers

Insurances have gone up. Not just car, but house/contents also. It's because putting a claim in has become more frequent now. That's what I was told by a person at an insurance company.

A little trick i always use is to use Comparison websites then phone the two lowest companies (starting with the highest) and just tell them you would rather shop with them what can they lower it to, Take the quote no. and then explain you will discuss with your partner.. Phone the lowest company and do the same... see how long you can go on for.
I got my insurance down very low this year from an almost doubled renewal letter.

Your premium may have gone up but that doesn't mean you have to pay more... shop around, get cheap or same quotes, phone your insurer back with your findings, they will beat it most of the time.

My Elephant insurance was £750~ this year, this is with 4 years NCB, no claims in past 5 years etc and that premium quote was £10 more than last year so I shopped around and got a cheaper Admiral quote with the a same spec policy so saved the ref, phoned up Elephant and they dropped the renewal to just under £550.

A massive saving.

Car insurance can be haggled, just have a handful of cheaper/same quotes and your insurer should be able to drop the price more!

I've done every comparison website, Direct Line, Aviva and Swinton. I can't get a lower quote, so I have nothing to haggle with!

Didn't realise insurance rates had gone up, I should perhaps read a paper every now and then :(

Don't use those sites, go directly to partner insurer sites and quote dircetly!

The Admiral group for example covers Bell, Admiral, Elephant etc and each one gives different quotes.

Tried them, £80 more than my renewal quote.

I wouldn't get so hacked off about it but we've only got a bloody diesel Vauxhall Astra :D

I changed my car recently and was met with a renewal of £1360. I was expecting around £8-900 going on the previous years quotes.

After reading about the massive rise it made sense. I rang the customer loyalty department and they dropped £250 off by me literally asking 'what am I entitled to' I didn't even need to push. But when I did they couldn't go any further. I got it cheaper elsewhere in the end.

If you don't ask you don't get.

[random rant]
At least you can get full comp on old cars in the UK.

In Belgium it is, for all intents and purposes, impossible to get anything more than 3rd party (not even TPFT) on stuff older than 6-7 years old

[/rant]

Do we really need another thread whinging about insurance?

I mean, really - why can people not figure out that were in the midst of a financial crisis, everything is getting more expensive, fraudulent claims are on the rise, No win no fee personal injury lawyers are roaming the planet and 18 year olds in saxos still can't drive properly.

So suck it up, deal with it and get on with your life - it's only money, life is way too short to spend your time getting angry at insurance companies for charging you another few pence a day

I was with Admirals multicar policy, they wanted to put my insurance up by £440 just because I moved house (still same town but different street, and actually a better area)
Total joke, so moved to a cheap online only based insurer and got it £40 cheaper than last year. Currently £640 for Me on a Civic VTI-S and Me and the missus on an Audi A4 TDi estate.
