you wanted? I can honestly say i still have absolutely no idea. Im almost 26 unfortunately still at home as it's incredibly difficult to raise 10% deposit for a mortgage on your own. And i suppose feeling like i need some inspiration, i have a decent job earning higher than average wages but i know it's not what i really want to do for the rest of my life.

How many of you are the same or in a similar circumstance?

I wanted to work with boats when I was a kid, and then by the time I went to uni I think I wanted to work with computers, but had no idea what type of work. My parents talked me into doing a 'real' degree instead. After dropping out of a Physics degree I worked in various warehouses loading and unloading lorries. Tried to get a place on a course as a trainee dental nurse (potential £15k salary tempted me), and eventually ended up getting a office temp job in a finance department. 2 years later I had convinced them to sponsor me whilst training as a CIMA accountant. Which lasted right up to Y2K when all the panic meant major changes to the accountancy systems, which somehow ended up my responsibility. Quick job suffle later and I was a systems admin. Not much fun, eventually left so that I could get a job at an ISP. That was the bottom rung as a DSL support phone monkey. Worked up to Managed support position, looking after customers managed servers, and CPE. 5 years later worked my way into Network Engineering, which I'm still doing quite a few years later, and plan to keep doing for the next 2 years, until IPv6 is fully deployed and integrated into all our systems. After that I'll have a little bit of a think about what I want to be doing, and whether I'm enjoying it.

Erm, so no. Not really. Didn't have the money to get a mortage till I was 35, but I did leave home for Uni and just rented for the next 17 years.

Things all change so quickly. I originally wanted to do a degree in Chemistry at University when I was 16, but then I enjoyed physics and didn't want to drop maths so I ended up doing my undergrad degree in Chemical Engineering. I was convinced then I would go into the Engineering profession straight away and have nothing else to do with theory.

Somewhere along the line it went wrong with employment and I ended starting a PhD in computational fluid dynamics - absolutely loaded with fluid mechanics, computer programming and mathematical theory. Who knows what I'll be doing in the next few years past PhD (if I make it that far!) - just look forward to the ride!

I've pretty much landed on my feet, took a job in hospital labs after leaving uni just to tide me over until I could figure out what I wanted to do - turns out I really enjoy my work and want to do this, even though I studied physics (unsuccessfully) at university and chemistry was the subject I liked least at A-levels. I'll be going back to uni at some point, it's a 4 year course as standard so it'll take a while to get where I want to go, but I feel like I've found my niche. I started this job when I was 23, for reference.

I didn't, and now think that I do. But we'll see :)

EDIT: Sorry, that's totally cryptic. I'm two years out of uni, and think I'm getting there with what I want to do...

I roughly knew, aged 18 or so, what I wanted to do when picking uni degrees - construction. I did go though a phase on having second thoughts but did not change courses. By the end of my degree, I had 2 options within said industry - architecture or structural engineering - and picked the latter in the end.

I do have the random thoughts along the lines of "I wonder if I would enjoy doing...?" but 3 years on and I am still enjoying it what I do. Targeting chartership with the next 2 years.

I'm in the Ambulance Service and do near enough all of the positions in the Control Room (Including Area Controller) which is as high as you can get apart from Duty Manager (But i'm only 22 lol) and i've done that in 2 years from 999 Call Taker upto Controller.

Still not convinced this is going to be my career but I don't know yet.

I never did - And still not 100% sure :p

I know that I don't want to stay in my current job forever - and will definitely jump to a completely different career - but being in a job that I currently enjoy, I can now take a longer look around and as I get older, hopefully I get more wiser and have a few better ideas than when I was 16 :p

Im 25 and ive never known what i wanted to do, until now. Managed to get an apprenticeship and go back to college in November :)

Wanted to be a teacher since I was about 15. Now I'm 23 and I am one. :)

Boyfriend at 23 still doesn't have a clue. Working for his parents currently, which he enjoys. Maybe he'll think of something else, or maybe he won't and will eventually take over his parents' business. Who knows?

Was the job as a lab assistant? I studied Biomed Sciences and worked as a Biomed scientist (fancy name for a technician) in the hospital labs. Now I've had a career change at 23 and am now studying Dentistry. There's no way I would've thought this is where I'd end up back in school!
