Samsung Galaxy Tab ... Android 2.2 Tablet

unlike the ipad, the price of this will come down over time.

also unlike the ipad you'll be able to get it cheaper than simfree cost if you take out a data plan contract(according to poket gamer cpw is doing it for £499 with a £10/month 1gb/month contract), with the ipad the data plan is on-top of the price of the 3g ipad.

I've pretty much decided to buy one of these for my birthday, unless there's something else I should wait for?

Advent vega? 10" screen, twice as powerful, half the cost :)

Having used a Galaxy Tab quite extensively now I can say that the build quality is amazing. On par with any Apple gadget easily. It is very slick, fast and the Samsung software that it comes loaded with is excellent. They really have invested time and money in this device.

The Toshiba Folio that has Tegra2 (which I have also used) I am not allowed to say too much about but I will say it is not a patch on the Samsung Tab.

I'm very keen to try one! Good news on the price too...

Yeah, it looks like Samsung has nailed it with the build/basic apps. The other android tablets look raw in comparison.

My only worry is these 1st gen tablets will become obsolete rather quickly. Similar to going from a 1st gen/3g iPhone to iPhone 4... apps and web browsing will be so much quicker (once iOS/gingerbread is optimized for the extra power)

You just know the iPad 2/galaxy tab 2 will be out next year with killer hardware...

The vega is more 'enthusiasts play thing' than consumer product.

Its android so still upgradeable. Samsung roadmap is still under NDA I am sorry to say.

Do these have a slot for USB keys to run films and copy files, etc?

If not, I won't really bother looking again because I had an iPad briefly and it lost the novelty after a week or so. I have an ultraportable 11.6" laptop (not an atom!) with an 8 hour battery life and I had to use that to copy stuff to the ipad to watch films on it so eventually I just got fed up and just started using the laptop again.

If the tab supports USB sticks/hard drives then the need for a laptop is greatly reduced! Not that I'll ever see one down this part of the world :(

You don't need to worry about seeing one out here... If you like one then just import it from places such as www.clove.co.uk, pay for royal mail delivery and you'll likely not have to pay GST... I'm looking at an Desire HD or Samsung S from the UK as it generally works out cheaper than either telecom or Voda.

I got to play with a Galaxy tab yesterday, its running 2.2 and is really smooth, the screen it just a lovely as the phone, and angry birds plays amazingly.

Size wise, its just right tbh, not to big and not to small, it fits inside a suit jacket pocket, and its not to heavy, it would be funny to make calls on due to its size, but for texting it would be fantastic.

Would i buy one ? probably not, its far to expensive for what you get, when there are other Tabs coming out just as good for a lot less.

from what i have seen i like it.......... but cant figure where they are trying to price this and what market they want... ?? i cant agree with the pricing at all,
