found an email at work being nasty about me.

Except that he is more than vindicated in wanting to take this further, two people conducting a defamatory (mildly so) conversation about him,

So what? Really?

Have you honestly never, ever, ever, ever said something negative about somebody to somebody else in what you thought was private?

I'm sure many of us have and if we got caught then the person in question is within their right to report it to HR/manager etc. :)

Why would anyone think that a company email system is private? That's just foolish.

hmm hard one to call. me personally, i would have forwarded it to myself, then sent it to my home address so ive allways got it, just incase you need the proof. then i think i would have pulled the manager (or whoever sent it) and had it out with them, asked if there was a problem then why not speak to me about it 1st rather than be a c*ck sucking sleasball. in all honesty that would proper p*ss me off if i found a superior whos supposed to be setting a example doing something like that. i hate things like it, it could put your job in danger at some point. dont take no ****, that being said im probably not the best person to take advise from on these matters as i got a bit of a short fuse with these kind of things.

Sign off all future emails to the manager with "- the charmless idiot" then if he brings it up let on the assistant manager told you.

I would just ignore it and get on with your job, making a big drama out of it could just cause further problems especially if they're higher up the corporate bum licking ladder.

At least now you know what ****holes they both are.

I would do this. It will make him paranoid, he won't know that you saw the email and will probably think he spoke to someone who leaked it back to you. Sit back and watch him squirm.

Shoulda printscreen'd it and set it as the desktop yo :p

You should have sent it to everyone from that account which would have covered yourself as you would have got it aswell. You would be clear to kick off whilst calling him an idiot for tripping up. The chances of somebody else important seeing it and kicking off would have been good aswell.

Amen.

Also you could have printed it out and put it up eveywhere for people to read :P

I like the idea of referring to yourself as the charmless idiot and seeing what hapenns, but it probably isn't a good idea :P

Exactly. Crazy or not, if this was reported then the subject of the message could raise an issue that they were being bullied. Legislation is very clear, and saying that worse happens in the canteen or by the watercooler is zero defence. It is very easy to contradict, however that is the effect of legislation today and blustering otherwise just doesn't cut it. That's not to say that it doesn't go on - I'm sure that pretty much all of us have sent an e-mail from a work system complaining about another work colleague in less than utterly professional terms. But you have to be ready for the consequences.

In this specific case however, common sense should prevail and if I was the OP I'd look to just nip it in the bud informally. And that doesn't mean avoiding HR if required - that's what they're there for.

It astounds me... Does no one know where and what email's go through? Why would you bother talking like that through a WORK email?

I would file a complaint mate. Go see IT and see if they can track the original message, must have gone through a filter if it had a swearie in it.

lots of people are nasty about other people normally behind there backs ,like the above says , i would just ignore it after all you were not meant to read it

This, I employ about 40 people and I get called allsorts, you get used to it. Their are a lot of bitchy people about most of them would not dare say it to your face.

"(COMPANY NAME) strives to maintain a workplace
free of harassment and sensitive to the diversity
of our employees. Any form of harassment or any
conduct that has the potential of creating a hostile
or discriminatory work environment is strictly
prohibited. Therefore, the company prohibits
employees from using, accessing, storing or
transmitting voice or electronic information over
its communication systems in ways that could be
found to be harassing, disruptive, offensive to others,
or harmful to morale. For example, the display or
transmission of sexually explicit or any racial or
sexual images, messages, and cartoons is strictly
prohibited. Other such misuse examples include, but
are not limited to: receiving or sending messages
with ethnic or religious slurs, racial comments, offcolour
jokes, or anything that may be construed
as harassment, showing disrespect, defamatory or
disparaging to others."

As written, that policy forbids everything. Anything can be offensive to someone. So it's essentially an excuse to use against any employer the company wants to use it against.

Also, it includes a convenient way to attack anyone - just send them an offcolour joke. It explicitly states that recieving offcolour jokes is forbidden.

If you've accessed this forum from work, you have broken those rules. There must be something in GD to offend someone. There certainly are offcolour jokes.

Since when can people not have private conversations?
The problem here is you reading other peoples email. It's just the electronic version of a chat around the water cooler.

They don't like you, get over it?

Bang on.
Just because they wrote it, it doesn't mean they meant it.
It's a bit like the Dons on here, they have a room where they can let off - it doesn't mean they really think I'm a ***** ***** ********* *******

this tbh. As soon as you realised it was logged in you should have locked the screen not go reading emails. And who cares if they don't like you, I don't like lots of people, and why do they need a reason to not like you. Well they have one now anyway.

Always the same in offices, gossip, dislikes, bitching.

It was a private email and none of your business
