02 won't transfer my old number to new PAYG SIM

My 02 pay monthly contract terminated earlier this week. I am now trying to get that pay monthly phone number tranferred to an 02 PAYG SIM but 02 customer services told me they can't do this because my contract has finished and that they could only do this if I renew the contract.

Is this right? Seems ridiculous to me.

I was under the impression that you can only do number transfers from network to network and not within the network.

^ Correct, won't O2 just allow you to transfer to PAYG and transfer your number internally?

Orange did ours a couple of years ago so why cant O2? You surely on a rolling contract now?

Is that not an internal transfer which Spawn says is not allowed?

I might give them one more try threatening to move to a different network if they don't do it. Can't see why they won't do it.

O2 WILL transfer your number to a PAYG SIM if you had asked them to before the contract was terminated. Apparently the number is lost once the account is closed, and it enters a pool of numbers where it can be reused.

What they will not do is move your number from one O2 contract to another O2 contract.
