Radeon 4870 1GB > GTX 460 768MB - worth it?

Yeah some people have poor case ventilation/airflow and some don't, it can have a big say in how cool and quiet a card runs.

Ah ok. I can say that even with the panel on, I have perfectly fine ventilation. Overal a good purchase, I can recommend it to the OP no issues at all.

Pretty sure this is just your assumption, or you are thinking some cards with crap cooler. Gigabyte's cooler is quiet up to 70% fan speed, and only start to become 'noticable' beyond that according to people that have it, and I don't see the GTX460 will become as hot as you claim, considering the GTX460 can reach 800MHz on stock voltage.

on my gigabyte GTX460 1gb the fan is silent even turned to 100% its still very quiet you are likely to never hear it above your psu/cpu cooler...

mine clocks to 790mhz without added voltage.

adding 0.1volts i got as high as 820 (going in 5mhz increments) before i decided to stop

So it's ok for GTX470 to run hot and be noisy because HD4870 did it as well?

Get off your high horse, I was merely stating that 4870's ran pretty hot too that's perhaps why his was a bit noisy.

Where in my post did I say "I think it's fine for GTX 470s to run hot and noisy"

Besides which the guy has already said that his 470 runs quieter than the 4870, I can't see what your getting your knickers in a twist over tbh?

With all the people saying the 6970 is going to be £400 im quite tempted to buy a 470GTX problem is i won't see much of a upgrade from my 4870x2 :( apart from DX11 and better drivers.

I'd go for either the MSI or Gigagbyte 460 1GB cards myself in your place.

If you could stretch the extra and can find a 470 at a cheap price then that would be even better for you.

I would get the HD6850 1GB especially at under £140. It only uses one PCI-E power connector and consumes less power than a GTX460 1GB which requires a pair of PCI-E power connectors. Despite this it can be overclocked upto around 900MHZ.

I currently have a pair of 1GB 4870's in crossfire but will be swapping them out for a single 6870 on Monday morning when my new card arrives. It may not be a performance upgrade as I believe the performance should be about equal however to me the new features, dx11, heat and power savings etc make it worthwhile.

Besides I can always add another 6870 later for crossfire if I don't find the perfomance as good as i had hoped :D
