How does the 6870 compare to the GTX 480?

I was set on the Ultima Dreadnought system. However, having seen the Titan Aurora, I am now torn!

I'm sure the Dreadnought is overall a better system. However, the Aurora is cheaper AND comes with Windows7 included in the price, whereas the Dreadnought requires Windows added at a cost of £70.63.

So with an OS, SSD drive, and the i5 upgrade on the Aurora the prices are:

Ultima Dreadnought: £1362.55

Titan Aurora: £1031.10

Which should I go for? Gaming is what it's about lol.

I see the Aurora has 4GB RAM (as opposed to the Dreadnought's 6GB), a lesser graphics card, a slower processor, and a slower HDD. The advantages are that it's £330 cheaper, has a larger HDD, and a blu-ray player.

I would go for the Aurora.

BUT, 40GB for SSD is not a lot (Even for OS). Either consider stepping up or do not bother IMO!

Differences in processors and ram are not substantial. Yours is theoretically upgradeable to 8GB, though that may or may not affect the stability of the overclock.

Does the 480 not blow the 6870 out the water though mate? Plus, the HDD is 5400RPM on the Aurora rather then 7200.

Would gaming performance not suffer from this plus the aforementioned (no matter hyow small)?

Blow it out of the water? That really depends on your definition. I suggest that you look at the reviews of 6870, and have a look at the games you actually game.

It is better, its also extremely power hungry and hot running. Not to mention hugely more expensive. If you shop around you can get TWO 6870 for a similar price of the 480. And those two together will blow the 480 out of the water.

Personally, neither the 480 nor the crossfire would be for me. I was gonna get either the 6850 and overclock it (this is overclockers after all), or the 6870, or a nicely clocked 460 if you gavour the nvidia camp.

An SSD will be noticeable, but i suggest moving to the 80GB model. Alternatively i suggest you call the shop and tell them to replace the 5400 drive with a 7200RPM drive, i am pretty sure you can do that.

40gig for Os is ok if you know that to disable and move round
My intel x25v is running win7 with 29gig spare
...
The480 and 6870 are 2 completely different cards, the 480 is far superior to 6870

The 480 is on average 23% better (and this is across all resolutions) than the 6870. I don't think it's fair to compare them since the 480 is Nvidia's high end, flagship card and should be treated as such. The 6870 is aimed squarely at the mid-range, it's basically the 2nd lowest 6xxx card.

If you were to compare, you'll have to wait for ATI's high end 69xx cards to come out next month to see what they bring. I suspect they'd give the 480 some thrashing, until the 580 comes out where the cycle repeats.

That all being said folks - which system would you go for? Besides you Trunks as you've already stated mate :)

Hello Wilks. :)

I'd say there is a substantial gap between the two. More than there was between the 4870 and 280gtx when they were both the top end cards over two years ago. I think not quite but approaching double the lead when comparing the above example.

Id say the difference is similar to that of the 4850 compared to 4870. Not extreme but noticeable at high enough settings.

A 40GB SSD would be fine if you want it just for the OS. I have a 60Gb drive with W7 Pro + 5 games and still got 6.5GB left.

Lol the talk of graphics cards blowing each other out of the water is funny. It is as if graphics card reside underwater and try to out do each other in the underwater fighting lol:D.

OP it would be highly relevant to compare the upcoming 6970 with the 480. Now that is the card everyone is eyeing upon to hopefully beat the 480:D.

What monitor do you have?

If you have the money to spend on the dreadnought which is £330 more you could just buy the aurora and another 6870 for crossfire which would still be cheaper than the dreadnought but would give you much better gaming power.

The Aurura does indeed seem like an amazing bargin, especially at the current offer price go with it matey that beaut will eat games alive.
