Read the question again - the original poster asked if a 6850 was faster than a 5850 so in order to prevent anybody from thinking that a 6850 is an ideal upgrade path from a 5850 I said NO (because it isn't).
Liampope - yes the 6850 is faster than a 5770 but it isnt a viable upgrade for an existing 5850 owner which is the point I was trying to get accross.
The new model line up as far as I know it is this considering that both the 5850 and 5870 are now discontinued..

Your original comment is still false and misleading.
You said "the 6850 is nearer to a 5770 perfomance wise." <-- This is extremely false. As others have pointed out, 6850 is about 5-25% slower than a 5850. It really depends on resolution and game.

6850 is faster than 1GB GTX460, hardly a slouch...
Ok perhaps it was worded badly and I should have just said 'No, it's not faster than a 5850'.
My intention was to point out that the 6850 is positioned at the lower end of the performance scale somewhere between a 5770 and what is currently the 5850 and that it is not directly comparable performance wise to a 5850.
Is that a better explanation?

Almost all the reviews I've seen the two cards are on par with each other. Yes the 6850 does deliver higher frame rate if comparing at 0xAA, but with 4xAA, the two cards are usually equal...and sometimes with the GTX460 1GB at couple frames ahead.
Frame rate wise with 4xAA:
GTX460 1GB at stock 675MHz = 6850 at stock speed 775MHz
6850 at 950MHz (175MHz OC) a couple fps lower than GTX460 1GB at 875MHz (200MHz OC)

Please edit your post as it's very misleading as the first reply. The 6850 is >30% faster than a 5770 and basically tied with the 5850.

So is 6850 at 950MHz. I have yet to see GTX460 that can't reach 800MHz. And your arguement is a bit weak and biased, as going by the same principle, the 6850 is not guarantee to go beyond 900MHz either. 6850 clock speed need to be 100MHz above GTX460 1GB's clock speed to deliver similiar frame rate, because while a stock speed 6850 is as fast as a stock speed GTX460 1GB, the 6850 is clocked at 775MHz, whereas the GTX460 1GB is clocked at 675MHz.

Not really. That is still false. 6850 is not "somewhere between 5770 and 5850". The 6850 beats the 5770 on average about 30-35%. The 6850 also consistently beat the 5830. The 6850 is only 5-25% slower than a 5850 depending on game and resolution. Therefore, one should not think of the 6850 as "somewhere between 5770 and 5850". One should think of it as a buffed 5830 or a nerfed 5850 performance vise.
Of course its not false - its faster than a 5770 and slower than a 5850 - that makes it somewhere between the two.
The 6850 does NOT tie with a 5850 - now that IS misleading!

I tend to only look at minimum frame rate scores.
Therefore a 6850 is only 5% faster than a 5830 and the comment on a 6850 being between the 5770 and 5850 is about right. Noticed this on more than one review site. But most tend to stick with averages.

Yes the 460's can reach 800 ok but 870 is a little much, I'd say it was more probable to to say 830-850 would be more likely clocks to achieve.
Where are you getting the 6850's OC data from?
It would be interesting to see what end users are getting, especially with a bit of voltage.
