council leader suspended for dressing up as Hitler.

Yes, and the whole point of a fancy dress party is fun. His idea of fun was to dress up as someone who was responsible for the death of 6 million people.

So we can't go take the mick out of anyone anymore?

If it was a Neo-Nazi party then yes I'd be worried but it's fancy dress, somehow though it's all taken seriously.

I can see where some people take offence as he's a council representative, but it's all a little too far to fire someone over it.

People are way too sensitive these days.

Yes, the war was horrible and everything that came with it, but he was just dressed up as a very famous person from history at the end of the day.

He looks more like Blakey from 'On the Buses' than Hitler, the real Nazis are the ones making the fuss out of nothing.

bad taste? yes

but a sackable offence at a fancy dress party that has no bearing on his ability to do his job. i dont think so tbh. he should dispute it at a tribunal

I wish we lived in a world where i could agree, but its Hitler... The Antichrist basically.... :O

Agreed, people are too sensitive these days. I wasn't around back then, and even before my time Hitler and the Nazis were being satirised on television with barely a whisper about the content. For example 'Allo 'Allo, Dad's Army.

If those very much more likely to have been in WWII didn't really have a problem with it, then I don't see why there is an issue these days.

I'm not saying that I agree with it. In fact, I think that he shouldn't have been fired. However, I am empathising with the people that fired.

Utterly stupid, it's comedy gold in true British tradition. Just compare it to allo allo which has a central character as an SS officer, did that cause offence? No your mocking the man not the victim in the same way we use an effigy of guy fawkes in derision.

PC idiots.

If nothing else given his position it demonstrates incredible poor judgement on his part. Whilst there are plenty of people around for who this is a bit of a laugh and ancient history, there are still an entire generation for who Adolf Hitler is responsible for untold misery.

Frankly it's not big and it's not clever...

Some people who used to live next door to my parents were held for quite a while in a concentration camp. So you're 100% right.

No, no it's not...

Yes, yes it is. It's been a common theme in British comedy / farce for a long time, dads army, Ello Ello, Monty python, faulty towers and many many more have all poked fun at hitler over the years.

This. Hitler was a poor choice but he has been lampooned since the 30's afterall. I wonder if dressing up as Stalin would have had the same effect.

There are worse choices with zero comedy attached to them.

Next it will an offence to even say his name in public without first mentioning about the usual if you get what i mean.

There's a difference between a comedy program poking fun at and satirising a reviled character and a council leadr who thinks it's clever to march around in jackboots, posts the photos on face book and then complains his privacy has been invaded.

Someone leading a council and a public officer is not the same as an actor playing a character as part of a comedy show.

Like I say, if nothing else it demonstrates poor judgement on an epic scale, not something that tends to build confidence in a council official...

Alas, satire is dead. Its not OK to have a fancy dress with someone dressed as Hitler, yet we have dictators on t-shirts, a terrorist in Che Guevera on multiple items, etc? People need to realise dressing as Hitler does not mean you are innately advocating the persecution of a religious group :) /rant
