Ok guys so i'm guessing im not the only one who saw the recent release of the 5870 and 5850 and thought OMG, why so cheap??

Cant believe what amd have done with the names its retarded. I was going to buy a 5850 for £200 and the 6870 performs about the same (if not worse) but im happy with saving the £30 odd, what a bargain even if it should be twice the power with that name.

Has AMDs choice annoyed anyone else? I feel like ive been lied too...

ANYWAY onto my question... Im building a new PC soon so have a few questions :p

---------------
Ive never had crossfire or sli before because never saw the sense in spending all that extra money when its more cost effective to just buy single card (pumping the money saved from the mobo AND a second card into one). BUT it sounds fun, and i may want it if you guys can help me into the dual world of money wasting.

(1) How cheap can you get a xfire board which has TWO x16 lanes? To me it seems an awfull waste to buy a £200 card, then to have it running at a half or even quarter of its speed... am i wrong to think like this?
-im looking at getting an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO 785G Socket AM3, looks well cheap for 70 quid but the second port runs at x4 mode.

(2) Are certain cards better for crossfire like the 6870?

(3) I see my GFX card supports Pci Express 2.1, is it worth gettin a board that supports that or is it useless?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!! :D

Ive always usually used asus but dont mind trying a different brand, i hear asus arnt the be4st anymore.

Also budget wise i can spend whatever need be, but not looking to spend much more than £130 as i believe having the crossfire will become pointless. £70 over the asus board, and another £200 on the other card would mean I could have just bought a £470 card... which would no doubt be better.

68XX cards scale better in Xfire than 58XX!

My very strongest advice would be to hold off and buy a single GPU 6970.
Your GPU strategy is the best one to have...

How have you been lied to, it was made quite evident that it's the mid range card.

They're good cards, will be a massive upgrade to your current one.

Not really. The HD5800 series were more of anomaly when it came to the ATI naming strategy. Both the HD3870 and HD4870 were between £150 to £250 at launch and the HD3850 and HD4850 under £150.

The 6800 series is going back to the older naming strategy of the HD3000 and HD4000 series.

Not exactly lied to - but 8xx has been the high end set of cards for several generations now, 7xx mid-range and so on so you can see how people are confused... I can't believe how many people are trying to gloss over it when AMD do it - yet when nVidia did it everyone was up in arms.

There was no 3970, etc. tho. 3870 was their top end card, 4870 was the top end card until the "ultra" 4890 came along, 5870 was their top single card...

Rroff, why do say things like this?
AMD didn't take a 5870 and re-badge it a 6870 did they?

Misleading - Yes
Nvidia Style renaming - No

thats awesome to know thanks dude!! makes me feel ive made a good purchase anyway, as im defo exited about crossfire... may have to wait till they come down in price again though, aparently they go up soon so buy em quick:)

at the end of the day a 5870 is like £300, and ****es all over a 6870 which aint right. New series, should be MUCH better.

Ill bet a lot of people buy these cards without looking at the specs cos they think they know the well grounded system. What theyre really getting is what we'd expect a 6770 to be like, shame on AMD for taking the unwise peoples money!

anyway im off to play some geometry wars on my sex box 360.... not much my poor little 4850 can handle now... not at 1080p anyway, the xbox does a better job

laters guys, dont argue too much!!

Well yes, but when Nvidia did it they also saw it as a great excuse to jack up the price. At least AMD only does one of those things at a time. :p

Are you trolling? The 4850 should be much better with games than an xbox is. You do know the xbox uses medium graphics on a crappy resolution? The xbox wouldn't handle any game at 1080p lol.
