After one year of searching and 3 years of wanting I have finally picked up a Monaro VXR.
It's the most immaculate example I have seen and the bonus of being completely standard so I can mod it in my own way.
It was owned by a 70 year old man, this car was his pride and joy and was purely a weekend car. Its 4 years old and done 14,000 miles. Full service history from Vauxhall, oil changes every 3,000 miles, new tyres on the rear and pretty much full life left of the brakes.
I'm actually surprised how much kit it has as standard.
Plus a host of other cool things
The coolest feature I've found so far is that the two keys remember your preferences such as Climate settings, seat settings, auto lights sensitivity and radio pre-sets.
I had a 100 miles ride back on the motorway and averaged 27mpg which from a 6.0l V8 isn't too shabby. The seats are very comfortable yet supportive and the ride is fairly soft and wind and road noise are controlled very well. All in all it makes the Monaro a very effective cruiser.
Around town is a bit of hard work as the gearbox and clutch feel like they've come from a tractor. Very stiff and heavy. I'm going to end up with one hell of a fapping arm driving this thing.
I've only had it a few days and I've already had random people coming up to me and asking about it and taking pictures. Not sure if that’s a good thing with my old car getting pinched.
The engine has a classic V8 rumble and you can defiantly tell that there is something special under the bonnet. The way it picks up speed is so effortless and silky smooth. It's really rather deceptive because it doesn't feel as quick as the Astra but the speedo certainly says otherwise!
