**wait for Ati 6970 or get the GTX 480?

Hang On
You will only regret it

According to this review, idle power for the 480 is 190 Watts and under load it's 421 Watts in Crysis, 479 in Furmark.

Unless you've got a decent brand PSU, it might be worth upgrading, particularly if you plan on using SLI later.

Actually, on this review, it's a fair bit less, so maybe you won't have to upgrade.

Buying a 480gtx is a big mistake. It would have been a big mistake 4 months ago. Now with 6970 around the corner it would be bordering on insanity.

6950 will probably = 480gtx
6970 will smash it.

I would say wait for the nvidia's 580gtx but that could be 3 months away.

edit: - Raven is probably writing an email to nvidia demanding MLAA for his gfx.

Wait!

Crazy to go 480 when new and potentiality a lot faster cards are around the corner. If you were a Nvidia nut then still I wouldn't recommend the 480 when apparently the GTX 580 is nearing release.

Do you know how far off the GTX580 is Raven?
Rumour says it's to be released in February 2011, but who knows.

If you are a buyer, you will be waiting until 2011. GF110/GTX580 is not expected to hit the shelves until the very end of January, likely early February. Given that Nvidia has yet to release a single GF1xx part on time, and hasn't released a single desktop Fermi chip that is fully working, don't hold your breath for a timely launch.

Just my opinion based upon 68xx vs 58xx shader improvemnets).

6950 > GTX 480
GTX 490 > 6950
6970 > GTX 490
2x 6850 SLI > all of the above and cost less.

If Nvidia had reworked Fermi cards within six months of a release they would have at least been telling everyone about them.

Instead, they're just pretend they have and will then come out with something in 6 months. :p Really, the "GTX580" announcement was only an attempt to dampen AMD's 6 series release. I think the fact that they said "580" and not "485" makes that even more apparent as well. Anything they release that's based on a 512 shader Fermi chip isn't going to warrant the 580 name at all.
