I'm just wondering, what's better for a budget of about £300...

2 5770's in Crossfire, or one 5870...

Or is there any other GPU reccomended for the budget...

Thanks for any help :D

wait for a few weeks and see what the 6950/6970's are like, they are the new replacements for the 5850/5870, the 6950 will likely be well within your budget, 6970 ~£350 at a guess

I have had both and i could tell you all about my experience of the 2 setups but it would be a bit pointless as in the end i'd suggest waiting until the 69xx cards become available and get one of those :)

Well £300 is sorta my budget I can't really go too high over it, considering it's all going on a new computer...

But from this thread, the 6xxx series is my best bet...

Thanks guys ;D

EDIT: If I was to go over my budget...Would Crossfire 6770's be good? or just one 6970 or 6870...?
Sorry for all the questions...

i think as your 4 months away from buying the card you should check nearer the time, nvidia might have something to offer by then also

Yeah, EMA takes a while to save up...If I ever get it...

Oh god, they're releasing the 5xx series?
As long as they don't cost too much I might be interested...

Thanks for the help!

Or how about people answer the question?

What is better: two 5770s or one 5870?

According to this review (which has two 5770s slightly OC), it's better.

And this review, using the stock clocks, is a bit mixed. It's better in some games, worse in others - however pretty much about the same.

If you already had a 5770, obviously just buy another one and you're set. However don't buy two from scratch and Crossfire them. Buy a 5870 now, and if you need to you can always buy another one down the line. With 6xxx coming out soon, 5xxx prices should be sure to fall.

I have had both, the 5770 setup was great but there were some annoying driver issues that were sometimes fixed with a hotfix or not resolved. Even now i think a lot of crossfire users are still using drivers as old as 10.4 as anything newer gives them problems. Also the minimum framerates on a crossfire 5770 setup are no where near as consistant as a 5870 and at worst will be at or slightly below that of a single 5770 due to the cpu overhead associated with multi gpu setups. The 5870 is smoother at the same framerate, i can only attribute this to microstutter/unequal frame output. I had not really noticed this until i moved to the 5870. The numbers shown in reviews for crossfire 5770 look great and indeed the preice/performance ratio is high but the 5870 (or any single card for that matter) is the better option over 2 slower cards. i'd still wait on the 69xx cards though.

@JeffyB
I've heard that AMD/ATI have driver problems, that's why I kinda shyed away from ATI/AMD...

Right, so if I was to get a GPU now then I would get a 5870, yes?
And if I was to wait, I should go for a 6xxx series...

yes 5870 would be better than 2x 5770 if you bought now
if you wer to wait then get a 69** card or see what nvidia is offering at the time

It was mainly crossfire that had mixed performance, as i said i have had next to no issues since moving to the 5870. The 6850/70 are out now and are priced to compete against nvidias 460 and 470. The 6950/70 will be the enthusiast parts pitched against the 480 and are the replacements for the 5850/70 these are the cards to be looking at imo. If buying now i'd go for either a 6870 or a gtx470, unless you want to push the boat out and get a 480 although i'd find it hard to recommend that as the 69xx cards are close to release.

Yeah, I'm not sure who to side with at the moment, I keep hearing things from my tutors and friends that Nvidia is the way to go, but I'm on a budget and AMD/ATI where acceptable...
But a 480 costs a bit, I'm just after something that'll allow me to play games around high settings...
