Birthday gifts - might as well not bother...

I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend if it makes you feel alright
I'll get you anything my friend if it makes you feel alright
'Cause I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love

Can't buy me looooooooooooooooooovveee

Well thanks to this thread I now feel sad and a complete selfish idiot.. So, OCUK thank you for making me see the errors of my ways. Thanks to you lot I’m sure I’ll be a better person in ooo say ‘five minutes’.

Cheers all, pleased to continue the trend of ‘worst thread ever’ and as always value the helpful and insightful advice from the members of OCUK lol

Or, I could just stop posting guff and actually work out stuff for myself – which is actually a damn good thought..!!

there shouldnt have been anything to work out in the first place other than how you can give your gf time with you.
some ppl :\

Shock news as time spent together more valuable than gifts!

Here's the good news - your girlfriend is not a shallow, vapid, materially obsessed witch.

What I loved about the OP was:

This year sadly I was unable to get time off work, I left it too late and missed the opportunity to book a few days off.

With all due respect, her birthday doesn't change from year to year.
This time last year you would have known about her birthday.
So how come you left it too late?
As soon as the "holiday chart" appeared for 2010 why didn't you book the day off?

You've really got no excuse for having to work her birthday.

This, is about summing it all up and the reason I feel a bit of an idiot... As you are 100% right, no excuse I know what she's like... Didn't know she felt as strongly about it till now but still live and learn.

Thanks..

MY goodness, what a bloody drama queen and pretty heartless. That's incredibly sweet. Would you prefer it if she just took the gifts and didn't give a damn about her time with you?

I echo most of the above statements.

Other than that it is a bit silly to use up a holiday day on a birthday?

Do what most people do, if the Bday is on a weekday, have a nice meal and a show or whatever, and then celebrate properly on the weekend.

Well from what the OP has told us it wouldn't have been "silly" at all to use up a holiday day on her birthday at all.
In fact it would have been nice and his GF would have really appreciated him for doing it.

Most of us have "odd days" of holiday to take every year - I know my holiday allowance doesn't make up a number of exact weeks, so "wasting" one of those odd days on my GF's birthday doesn't seem silly at all.

Why does she always have her birthday off?

In all honesty, celebrating birthdays is a bit stupid, but so well ingrained in society.

I hate this kinda attitude. My birthday is just another day, and if either myself or my girlfriend can't get the day off work/uni, then I just move it to another day, I really couldn't care less. Tell her to stop being so ungrateful.

Oooh thats a bit harsh. Birthdays are great, I always think anyone taking a day off work for a birthday is nice. To be honest, I don't mind taking a day off work for her birthday. I did honestly think that gifts would be enough, soon found out otherwise...

So, if having a day off work to be with her is more important then gifts so as she has company on her birthday - then thats fine.. I'll just book the time off work now for next year. Sorted.

I guess I just felt that after spending time looking for nice gifts, I got told thanks, but I'd rather have something else... I can at times not see the whole picture until someone else points it out..

As has happened in this thread, I've learnt - won't make this mistake again..:p
