NVIDIA to Counter Radeon HD 6970 ''Cayman'' with GeForce GTX 580

Err the whole point of them releasing it is to kill off the 6970, what would be the point if it didn't do that. Nvidia have the resources and know how to make it so.

Is that the same know how that helped them kill off the 5 series? What a stupid statement. Its pretty obvious nvidia do not have the architecture on 40nm to kill of the 6 series.

We're talking about having the worlds fastest GPU, what would be the point of Nvidia releasing their fastest GPU after the 6970 and it being slower, they gain nothing because sales will be crap and they get laughed at for not delivering. They delivered last time, 480>5870>470>5850 I won't include dual GPU cards. And please don't pretend you know that Nvidia don't have the ability to do a 40nm chip that can't compete.

Lol @ Nvidia

Well what do we have here?

The rumoured GeForce GTX 580 has just shown up on NVIDIA's website (though the page has since been altered to remove the reference) in the section listing 3D Vision system requirements, perched atop a list of current video cards. Though it's listed under 'GeForce 500 Series', there are no other cards from the 500-family, suggesting that it's likely to launch alone.

Unfortunately, there are absolutely no details as to what might power the card, though it does give credence to the rumours from last week that this monster of a GPU might become a reality. Reports are currently conflicting as to what the chip might be, with some claiming that it'll simply be a full-featured GF100 core and others suspecting a tweaked core codenamed GF110 that will herald a new line of Fermi-derrived GPUs.

If we were cynics, we'd think that this 'accident' was a move to draw attention away from AMD ahead of the launch of the Radeon 6000-series. While this - combined with the now confirmed GTX 460 and GTX 470 price drops earlier today - will certainly generate a fair bit of coverage, it's unlikely to deter the media storm that will surround the launch of the new family of Radeon GPUs.

Nonetheless, it's a sly move by NVIDIA that will, at the very least, have the fanboys salivating at the prospect of an ultra-powerful Fermi GPU.

Never said you did do trolling, poster #88 on the other hand....

I'm just going on what's coming of the grapevine.

32 shaders a cluster.. dont know where this "48" has cropped up from.

Andy

As said, GF104 DID change the granularity to 48 shaders. It has the exact same type of shader, and basically each part of the architecture, just in differing ratios basically. The efficiency increase in actual performance per shader came from better balance of shader vs rasterising engine, ok its got a few more special units but they are very small in total power vs the rest of the core.

It would be pretty strange for them to release a new core based on the older architecture(slightly older), if its almost exactly a gf104, just bigger, then it couldn't be 512shaders.

Its all a bit of unknowns with Nvidia, they clearly haven't to date got a 512shader GF100 out, they haven't to date got a 384shader GF104 out, even the people with zero confidence in Nvidia's manufacturing capabilitys didn't think they'd be unable so far to get a full shader gf104 out due to how much smaller it is than the GF100. Will they bring out a 384shader part, we all thought so, the rumours are even stronger now, but I'm less and less sure it will happen.

Will the 580gtx be a GF104 based architecture, why the rumours of 512shaders? Is it another minor tweak, all things the same but a slight change in the SM size isn't very difficult at all, smaller number of shaders per SM should/could lead to higher yields, if theres only one fault if its in a 48 shader cluster, you lose all 48 shaders, if its in a 32 shader cluster, you only have to turn off 32.

Keep in mind that if GF104 was 32 shaders, we know, its been confirmed by Nvidia that GF104 has 384 shaders in, 384-48shaders = 336. 384 -32 =352, we know its not a 32 shader cluster in GF104.

Maybe 580GTX really is actually the fully enabled 480gtx's they may or may not have stockpiled somewhere, if so it will likely be tiny quantities of cards.

Who knows at this stage, probably no one at all but Nvidia.

Well to be Fair no one can predict the weather so i don't see why so many arguments happen on thease forums because paper stats don't mean real world performance to many varaibles to consider from the Game the Drivers and other hardware bottle necks :( just remember if there was not 2 companys in the race cards would cost £1000s because a single company would be greedy and evolution of cards would not be as rapid since there would be no compo so stop hating the other company so much and be thankful you actually have a choice of cards.

Less QQ more Pew pew
