How does the 6870 compare to the GTX 480?

I would agree with that most of the time, but in the case of the GTX480 it will run louder and hotter than a SLI 460 or Crossfire 6 series setup, and uses very similar power draw.

^^^

68XX Xfire looks to be a better choice than the 460 SLI due to it's more advanced features and better scaling.

Ultimately my recommendation would be to wait a month for Cayman if heat and noise are an issue.

wait wait wait, thats all i can say, people who jump the gun now are going to be gutted they didnt wait that extra 2-3 weeks

Thanks folks.

The monitor I will be getting is the Samsung B2430H 24".

I don't have a desktop system atm and really want a new one for the release of COD Black Ops. Anything I get will be a massive improvement on my laptops.

I don't think anyone why buys that aurura will be dissapointed, it real nice however if your concerned about having the best you can get GPU wise you probably are best waiting till November for the top end 6xxx series to come out. Judging by the performance of the first batch were in for a real treat.

You can have a crossfire 6870 for the price of a single 480gtx.

They will both use same ammount of power.

6870x2 will be quieter, faster and overall better.

Since I've missed the boat on the Aurora dea, I'll probably be going for the Dreadnought. I'm still thinking it over though as it is very expensive!

:D

Build your own, at that price you can save £100-£150 and don't give me all that 'ohhh I'm afraid', be a man for once and DIY it, it's easy.

Yep it's pretty much like Lego nowadays and virtually everything can only be inserted one way, plus it's colour co-ordinated too.

The hardest bit is probably putting on a heatsink/fan - if you do it wrong you may have to get some extra thermal paste and start over.

Even now - the aurora looks great value. I was gonna say add the second GPU and it kills the dreadnaught still for less money, but be careful because the mobo they use doesn't support 'proper' x8/x8 x-fire. Not sure why they offer the option on such a mobo?? Build it yourself and get exactly what you want - it's easy peasy and you know it makes sense! Then there's no phoning the shop and saying, can you change that HDD, not sure about the case, or the mobo, etc etc etc. Build build build.

Haha, yeah man just get the one that you really want. I would built my own but not everyone likes that :)

The dreadnought is expensive, and to be honest if you are going to spend this much you might as well wait for the 69xx series. It will probably be better. 480 GTX is about to lose the crown so it wouldn't be very nice to buy it right now.

But "Ohhh I'm afraid!" :)

In all seriousness I'm sure that it isn't as hard as it sounds. However, I've just moved house, started nwew job, kids/wife etc still settling into the area. The last thing I need is to be cluttering up the house and vanishing to build a computer - it would cause more hassle than it was worth :)

For £100 saving, I think I'd rather buy a pre-built and pre-overclocked machine......this time anyway.....

:)

sound like the wife wears the pants to me:D

think of it as an education, to the kids, show them as you learn

Personally, i would build it myself. If a 13 year old can - so can you! Also, wait until December when the new ATI cards come out, then the prices may fall.

Also - get the kids to help!

I went for the Aurora when it was on offer over the weekend - I couldn't convince myself to spend time making it myself either :) Very much looking forward to it's arrival though, just need some new games to really test it out!

I REALLY am torn here folks. The Aurora is roughly £350 cheaper than the Dreeadnought, but will I live in disappointment if I purchase the lesser system.

Also, If I knew the 69xx series was out soon I would wait - but is it out in November or announced and out in December? Plus we all know that you can never keep on top of PC tech :)

I need a cracking PC now!!!!

wilks
by the looks of it you have a pc now, i would ( and other will also ) STRONGLY suggest you wait. Another 2-3 weeks is not going to hurt you is it.
Im waiting for 69xx now and ive had a crappy 8400gs in my system after selling my 5870 crossfire cards. ive been tempted loads of times by new nvidia $$$ but ive resisted
I think you will only regret it when the new cards arrive.
a cracking pc now will be a less cracking pc in a months time

The Intel Sandy Bridge chip are also coming out around February I think, which is apparently when Nvidia are releasing their 580 cards. So it's a matter of how long you want to play the waiting game.

I agree with GJ02 though, you should wait at least a few more weeks for the 69xx cards to come out considering you're buying top end.
