Hi guys,

Continuing from - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18199851

I asked if getting myself a better car would save me money in the long run.

At the moment i have a Citroen C2 1.4l and travel 45 miles per day on the motorway. At the moment this is costing me between £160/200pm which is a lot out of the pay packet!

Duke posted back and suggested i get a Mondeo TDCi (you guys seem to like this car) or something similar.

At the moment, i could probably sell the car for £2,500 - £3,000 so could i get a Mondeo or something else (in decent condition) for that price? I could add another 1/1.5k on top.

Thank you.

Doing this will save 40 quid a month or so.

As a money saving plan spending 1500 quid to save 40 quid a month is not sensible.

Only do it if you fancy a new car.

I agree with Fox, it would take you three years before you actually started saving anything. If you could do a straight swap or buy a Mondeo with the money you get from selling your current car it would make a bit more sense (bar the hassle).

However a 3k Mondeo is likely to be older/higher mileage than the C2 so it could end up being a false economy if something like the DMF fails.

*Edit* Also, genuine question, what are the other running costs of a C2 like compared to a Mondeo? Tyres, Tax, servicing etc. could all negate the monthly saving on fuel in the long run.

Don't make this purchase if you think it'll save you a lot of money, it won't. Pretty disappointing mpg figures from the citroen, I thought that was their main selling feature...

and its on a motorway

could be cheaper to fix your car (put air in tyres, take handbrake off, use 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear not just 1st)

I can't understand why your car is only getting average 30mpg when it's a motorway journey? I used to do 50mile round trip a day in an old 2 litre turbo and that would see me average 30mpg

Either something is terribly wrong with your car or you are late to work every morning :D

You'd be suprised how cheap Mondeo's are these days - HERE

It's a year older and only has an extra 10k on the clock compared to my C2.

Overall cost isn't too much for the C2 - Tyres are about £250, tax is £66 for 6 months, servicing normally costs me about £250.

Take the back seats and passenger seat out, remove the spare wheel, put a few more psi in the tyres, drive at a steady 60, don't accelerate or slow down too quickly.

Oh and do a brim test on your next tank if you don't already (brim, reset trip meter, next time you fill up brim again and work out mpg from the fuel used).

If your mpg is not what you should expect (owners manual extra urban) get it serviced and tell them it's drinking fuel.
