I've had a creative 4.1 sound system for a very long time , probably 5 years or more and a friend sold me their theatre sound system for a good price !. I jumped at the chance what with HDMI , DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1. I was suprised to see that it had an optical in and my sound card had optical out. Wasn't a straight fit though had to get an adapter and even then ran into problems getting it to run 5.1. Apparantly this xfi although is ready for dts and dolby , creative don't supply the software for it and you have to pay. Without it , it just defaults to 2 channel sound through all speakers. So sod it , it was cheap and so was the dts/dolby digital software pack i spent most of the evening setting it up. Most fiddly was finding the encoder settings and which ones to use via the creative control panel.

First track i played was an abba track , it was the only track that came to mind lol. But the sound was incredible , i felt i was there with abba and i could hear and feel every instrument. For movies/tv i watched merlin and hearing the clash of swords impressed me even more.

But the real deal came with Medal of honour , now personaly i don't rate the game that highly but it came to a new level with my theatre system. I loaded up the options , changed it over to 5.1 + Home Theatre System . In game wow! , firing those guns hearing the echo through the valley , gun bullets wizzing past my head , planes screaming over head. What an experience , i knew sound was important but i did not know what i was missing.

All i need is another optical audio cable and i can also plug the ps3 into it :D

Separates are always the way to go and until you take the step towards a proper amp and speaker set you wont appreciate the difference.

Glad you enjoy. I personally have a 2.0 setup with a marantz pm6003 amp and 2010 Q-acoustic speakers and I love it.

Ps. Out of curiosity, are you the same Neil that is on Rangers Media?

just wondering chris what are your thoughts on the Asus Xonar D2X soundcard?

To be honest , I seemed to be one of the lucky ones who owned an original xtrememusic card and did not suffer in anyway from the driver issues or crashes that were synonymous with creative cards but I had spare money to burn and I opted for the Asus card knowing I was upgrading from pc speakers and thinking it to be a necessary upgrade.

Its a nice card. I do like the way the connectors are lit up at the back and I am fully aware that there is better components on there than my previous card. The floppy connector however a necessary evil, is a PITA. From what I have read something that you can easily damage through force when connecting.

I did get most of my sound parts together, which were the amp, speakers, d2x card and also my Beyerdynamics dt770 pros headphones. Its a good card. I do like it but thinking back I cant really say the rhyme or reason on why I opted for the D2X over the D2.
