HTC Desire HD (Ace)

seems it could be an issue with the market and not just me?

EDIT: just logged into my gmail account on the pc and the app downloaded after the 10th try - odd

anyway, I'm android noob and got some questions:
Is there a task switcher program? I keep pressing the back button to get to where I need to be
how do I uninstall apps that came with the phone, eg amazon music, twitter apps

need to play around and find an alarm app which does auto snooze and one that connects to my pc (need wake on lan and logmein ignition app?)

I was having issues with market and I just tried this posted a page back by someone, downloaded Appbrain from the market and for some reason mines fine now and that app is super fast.

I'm finding that I love the hardware and OS, very slick and much more flexible than my 3GS, but the Android Market Place is less well stocked with decent apps than the Apple App Store. I'm sure this will improve though due to all the people buying DHD's.

Also, I was in a techie meeting today where everyone (5 other guys) plonked their phones on the desk and I was the only person who didn't have an iPhone. It feels good not to conform (plus the extra screen size on my DHD really was apparent).

I do have a question though:

When I install apps from the marketplace there are notice icons on the top status bar showing they are downloading and then installed. However, these notification icons stay there after the apps have installed, how do reset or get rid of them?

Pull the status bar down and hit clear.

Argh I want to get this but the battery life is concerning me, it does seem to be very low capacity for what it's powering.

I might wait and see what Samsung have to announce on the 8th.

hah i know exactly what you mean.. nice feeling isnt it :)

funny how Apples slogan in the 90's was "Think Different"... really should be "Think the same" now :D

I've just received my DHD and wow, the screen is great and it's fast!!

Any pointers on what apps are recommended to get, cheers?

Launcher Pro
SwitchPro
Angry Birds
Air Control
Sky+ (if you have Sky+)
SwiftKey
barcode scanner
AppBrain Market (allows you to brows the andriod market on any pc, add apps to yuor list and then just sync on your phone. it'll see what you added and trot off and get them)
ChompSMS (nicer SMS sytem than stock)

Enjoy :)

what are the maps like on it (HTC ones) as they are meant to be based on TomTom. is there a traffic plugin? if so how much?

I stuck mine on charge all of Monday night. Unplugged it at 7am and by 8pm it had 30% left with medium usage. from 8-9pm I was using it constantly (browsing internet, playing Drop and Angry Birds) and was then left with 5%.

I've installed the temporary root access this morning (using VISIONary) and Adfree is working great.

My to install list;

VISIONary -temporary root
AdFree -needs root

Swype?
spotify
Drop
Gstrings
wifiscanner
Unit Converter
GPS status
Facebook
Opera
Netcounter
WeatherBug
aDyno

Compass
Flight Director
Switch network
Google Earth
Network Monitor - This is like Netcounter but better as it doesn't have an issue with wifi and just looks cooler (it has a live graph showing you the current download/upload speed available )
APNDroid - This is a simple toggle for switching on and off 3G - good for battery life. Also includes a handy widget.
ColorNote - This is the best notepad app i've found, also includes a handy little widget
Remote VNC
Wifi Analyser - very nice free application with graphs, dials and detailed signal information.
Paces Directory - Google's guide to what's happening locally
My Tracks
London Underground
Reality Browser 3.0 - not sure what it is?
Barcode Scanner
Photoshop.com Mobile
Wake-on-LAN
ConnectBot - SSH client
Beebplayer

Actually very disappointing. In my opinion it comes with way two many "apps" that do the same thing - Locations, Navigation, Maps. I didn't know which one to use at first.

Locations/Navigation is the HTC-built system you'll see in the quick look videos. They're fine, maps are preloaded etc, but the search function for directions doesn't support postcodes, making the entire thing completely pointless.

Fortunately Maps is the Google-built system which does. I haven't used either for actual navigation yet though so can't comment.

Just use maps to input the postcode, click the little pop-up tab over the pin and then use the option to navigate there (from your current GPS location - little 90 degree arrow). Takes you into Navigation with the postcode loaded as the destination.
