Good evening guys.

Driving to the shops today appears to have just been too much for my trusty workhorse and the engine management light has turned on. There has not been any noticeable change in how it drives, nor has anything happened which could have caused it.

What would you guys suggest? It's just ticked over to 60,000 miles on a 51 plate, it's the 2 litre zetec petrol variant, an estate if that makes a difference?!

What would you suggest the first thing to do is. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty if it's an easy job, and I've got my gf's dad who has rebuilt his Dolomite Sprint engine a few times!

I would be hugely grateful for any advice you can offer me. Sods law that this happens just over a week before I start a job which will be requiring me to drive a fair bit more!

Cheers.

Rob.

Which code reader would you suggest? Doesn't need to set the world on fire, just check and reset. Do they come with the correct cable?

I bought an Elm (can't remember the number) box last month. Comes with cables, one end into you OBD2 port on the car and the other end USB for laptop.

Came with software, managed to read a fault code on my fiesta and reset with no problem.

Less than £30 from t'bay... Can see it being fairly useful for other cars too :)

Hope this helps

Excellent. This morning it has extinguished! I have a neighbour who owns a garage so will see if i am able to get him to check it out still when i get a chance. On a side note. I need to change the front discs and pads ASAP (was an advisory on the last MOT) what are suggested parts? There are Mintex pads and discs on the Bay for £40, are these reasonable?

Kind regards,

Rob

If you go to ECP make sure you buy the Pagid discs and not the Eicher ones. The Eicher ones are made of cheese. Although shame on you for letting discs and pads get so bad that they're shown up on an MOT, then not rectifying straight away.

It may of been a one off but there again, chances are their is probably a fault code stored on the ECU but if the light doesn't come back on anytime soon I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it does, definately get it checked out.

Yeah Mintex are really good and £40 is a very good price. I got my Mintex front pads & discs for my Focus too a few months back and they were £36 delivered off ebay at the time.

Yes I know shame on me! I should have got this sorted a while ago but the brake performance has been fine. All ordered now. Time to get this sorted! Next challenge... changing my first set of brakes (weith asd little assistant from my girlfriends dad as possible!)

Cheers all!

really that bad? ive put them in a few cars and not had issues (although i cant actually remember which or whose cars at the moment, but i know ive had a fair few

I've heard bad things about the eicher pads but not the discs. I fitted Vetech (GSF ownbrand) discs and Mintex pads to the rear of my S60. No problems yet.
