Sorry for duplicating a thread, but rather than trudging through the monster Clio 172/182 thread I was wondering if someone could give a quick summary of the following for a phase 2 clio 172:

What's likely to fail?

What should one look for when buying?

How much do repairs cost?

Is there any preventative work which is good to do?

Any other useful tips?

Cheers,

What's likely to fail?

Cambelt. And whatever else is about to fall off.

What should one look for when buying?

Interstellar death rays

How much do repairs cost?

A hundred thousand million dollars.

Is there any preventative work which is good to do?

Don't buy ****.

Any other useful tips?

Mind and give the tyres a good kick.

;)

There's lots of useful information over on cliosport.net

Cambelt/AuxBelts need doing at specific intervals and can be done for around £500-600. So if you've found an example which is going to need them done knock £600 off your offer straight away. (from memory the intervals are 36k and 72k (or 5 years))

Theres endless things to look for all of which are complied over on cliosport.net

I bought an 02 sport about 15 months ago and so am perfectly placed to advise :D

Mine was 50k miles and I got the dealer to get the cam belt changed before I bought it, as it was needed (time not milage). you get a multichanger under the passenger seat, after 02 I think they have ESP or some sort of traction control, I just missed out on that.

Since owning it i've cured a rattle from the heatshield, just above the manifold. The exhaust was the original and developed a hole, took that off and welded it up as the rest of it looked good. Slight creaking from the front end when you wiggle the steering (only after being driven for a while) turned out to be the bottom ball joints, £7 a side plus fitting.

Now its ok, quiet, comfy, quick enough for a daily driver. MPG about 38 if you dont welly it. I like it, anything else?

Had my 172 Ph2 for about 10 months.

Great fun.

As for whats likely to go wrong, ive found it to be the 'Renault' parts, i.e. the bits shared with all other Clios. Such as electrics. Nothing serious, just those annoying PITA problems, like fog indicator lights comming on when you brake, airbag lights coming on because the pretentioner cables are to short and pull them selves apart when you adjust the seats, etc.

And replacing a cambelt isnt cheap, especially if you do everything at once like I did (cambelt, Aux belt, dephaser pully) so look for one thats been done already.

As for usefull tips, lower the drivers seat with some washers as the default seating position is way to high. Also, the steering wheels melt, so either look for a good one, or better still get it refurbished (got mine done by Arran on CS, excellent job). Ive also got a 182 style twin exit exhaust on mine and think it looks a lot better than the rather plain rear bumper on the standard 172.

Oh, and one other thing ive remembered, the headlights fog up and go hazy and yellow. Its easily fixed with some wet n dry and then some polish, but the seller doesnt need to know that so can be used to push the price down if needs be.

Did you also replaced the bumper for it to fit?

Pics?

The steering wheel melts?

The leather on the steering wheel becomes 'wrinkled' and does 'run' very slightly. Best explained with pictures. The thumb grips can also wear badly.

My steering wheel was mint when I brought the car. Parked on the drive in the summer sun for the afternoon and it had started to melt :(

Pop a towel over the wheel now to keep it cool and stop it getting worse. A member on CS will do a refurb for £150 in any leather/colour stitching you require. Next on my list of things to do.
