is a 5850 faster than a 480

Its within spitting distance unless under extreme tesselation. Somebody will probably come along and tell me how wrong I am but the 5850 at 1000 core is about 10% ish faster than a 5870 which is 10-20% behind the 480.

Hope this kind of answers your question.

edit: haha didn't even finish the post.

Also I will happily post benches of a 1000 core 5850 for some comparisons.

I just sold mine 5850 watercooled and bought GTX480.
Answer is no, ati is much slower than gtx480.
Mine 5850 was able to OC to 1005/1200 and even with that clock was slower then stock GTX480.

^^ Yeah do, I'll bench my 480 @ stock, 1680x1050 res. I could set my rig back up on my LG 1080p TV but cba.

Crysis bench 8xAA

Dirt 2 8xAA

RE5 variable bench 8xAA

Sounds good but will have to be this evening as I am currently at work :( I have no doubt that the 480 will be quicker, but how much is the question.

1680x1050 should be fine although a little low for the cards in question. Max oc on my 5850 is 1050 core under air so thats about as hard as I can push it. Also we will need to bear in mind that mine is running alongside a 3ghz q6600. No fancy i7 for me just yet :(

Yeah it's a great card, no 480 beater even when clocked though. 3D06 not a very good performance indicator, way to CPU dependent.

Nah 1680 will work any good card if the game is intense enough, crysis, metro 2033, GTA4, ARMA ect. Yeah you will be at a disadvantage with that CPU though.

This is true, in fact i think an old pair of 38xx cards put up better numbers than the 5850 in 3dmark 06 when I tested.

When benching I will use the ops 1000/1150 clocks :)

Yes because 1080p is such a massive res compared to 1680x1050 lol, if you wish I can do some fraps runs with some of the games I mentioned at my res, it's nowhere near 60 FPS average in most of them, 480 still overkill?

i would have gave it a go myself but ill have d/load install dirt 2 and ive just seen metro on steam for £6.12 so might need all my bandwidth to d/load that to play tonight

cheers

Got dirt 2 installed so thats a good start for me :) I have been playing at 5760x1080 with the 5850 so the 1680 res will look a bit different for me.

It's a close one....

1000mhz - 1300mhz 5870 destroys factory 480.
480 strength is in over-clocking, with 30% oc it becomes a bit of a beast.
Without it , it's just very poor card for the price.

why all the high AA does the 480 handle it better?

Yes it does....
Sweet spot for 5 series is 4x. At 8x Nvidia takes it.

Low res high AA= fugly
High res moderate AA = nice

Here's stock 480 getting hammered by 5870 stock and even 6870......

Oh looks here's a stock 480 hamming everything with better IQ settings, even taking on the 5970.

I'm surprised a mod has not dealt with the extreme AMD fanboy yet, need a nudge.
