Moral / Legal Dilema

Okay - lets put the shoe on the other foot. Do you really think if we'd overpaid by £304.00 and hadn't noticed the hotel would phone us up offering a refund?

Yes, they've made a mistake and yes, everyone has different morals. This is why I'm posting here, I'm hoping to get an better idea of what exactly the general concenus is in relation to this dilemma?






/ Edit - yes, I'm also aware I've miss spelt Dilemma in the thread title (dam my typing skills) If a MOD could fix I'll offer a free tinternet cookie

My own personal opinion is to say **** it to the big company and buy herself a nice bottle of champagne as a treat for organising all of this on behalf of her classmates!

On the other hand it would lie on my conscience if some poor bloke / lass at the hotel had this coming out of their wages due to an honest error. Also the money actually belongs to her classmates, granted I don't know them but there's no way I'd deliberately steal from them which is why I'd probably put the money behind the bar so everyone can at least get one drink out of this!
 
If it were me id keep the money. Their mistake let them rectify it, you are already paying enough for their sub par food and sparkling wine.
 
Get it sorted... if your going to that effort to put on an event like that you really don't want things possibly going wrong on the day if they realise the mistake and get awkward about it.
 
Keep the money but dont spend it. Stick it in a seperate bank account for example and leave it for 6 months. If no one claims it, much like the po-lice, then its yours :)
 
Tell them of the mistake and pay the remaining balance

I'm assuming you were happy with their service?

That's the point though - the hotels event co ordinator worked out all the little details yesterday, came back with a slip of paper and says "This is your final bill, are you happy with that?"

My OH glanced through it as she'd already worked out all the payments beforehand and automatically thought she'd miscalculated in her workings. Everything has been paid for now!

The only people likely to claim it would be the hotel (if they notice) but to me that would be like stealing from your classmates of the past four years (its just not done) I'd be more inclined to stick it behind the bar and allow everyone to get at least one drink out of it. Mrs Fifer is at work today but I'll point her in the direction of this thread later today when she comes home.
 
The place will in all likelihood ask you to pay something extra after the grad ball due to people breaking stuff or other hidden charges, so you'd best use that money to that effect. Otherwise you could just chip it in for pictures of everyone or something similar?

As stated in a few posts above you this does involve people. I've had personal experience of having to pay for mistakes made while on the job in similar situations to this, it's not fun knowing that when you thought you were making €80 that day for work you actually ended up owing €20 or whatever!

Go back to the hotel, tell them and if they're nice they'll give you a discount, maybe just charge you half the excess or something. Atleast the bar staff won't get in too much hassle.
