Not saying i favour it, but just wondering why 5 minute rounds were chosen instead of copying boxings 3 rounds.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having say 5x3minute rounds as opposed to 3x5 minute rounds.
And 7x3 or 9x3 minute for championship matches.

Advantages i can think of-
-Better pace through more of the fight. so many fighters seem exhausted entering the 3rd round. with more rest stops they should be able to last.
-Takes away the huge advantage wrestlers have, who can hold you down for 5minutes at a time. standing the fighters up gives some advantage back to the standup fighters.

Disdvantage
-Jujitsu specialist lose a lot as they take a while to manouvre opponent into position. 3 minutes may not be enough.

But grappling is really limited it seems, especially when a good wrestler is competing.

The grapplers can't take down anyone with decent wrestling ability, and the wrestlers themselves can't grapple. they're just able to hold their opponent down.

A bit limited maybe (not in my opinion though) but if you remove the chance for it you end up with bad kick boxing matches.
It cant be that limited, Silva had his last minute lucky choke, Maia subbing people left right and centre and more.

I'm totally bias here but I'd say it has to do with the intensity of the sport itself. I've hardly ever seen a 5 minute MMA round that comes close to the energy, effort and concentration spent during 3 minutes of boxing, amateur or professional.

but boxers last up to over 30 mins of fighting compared to UFC's 15 minutes. a big part of that must be the more frequent breaks.

I'm just tired of watching 10 minutes of fighting followed by 5 mins of 2 guys, both hands dow, panting barely able to move or swing a punch.

Obviously there are many exceptions (diego Sanchez the other day) but it happens too often even at the top tiers of the sport like the UFC.

You need to watch the WEC.

I was thinking this too the other day thinking 3 minutes better, would allow fighters well to fight lol

But yeah guess theres a reason why we got 5 minute rounds it seems to just give enough time to create things even if the action can be slow....

Or perhaps we should have different minute rounds for each weight class?

When you see how tired fighters get after 3 x 5 minute rounds, professional fighters who train for these fights for 3 months.

Shows how hard it is, I've done 2 x 5 minute round fights and that was enough I can tell you, it requires far more energy than just boxing.

The only fight I can recall where Sanchez has ever fought at less than a million miles an hour is against Josh Koscheck due to a) Koscheck practically running away from him, and b) Sanchez having a serious thigh infection of some sort (I forget exactly what)... The guy is mental...

You should watch Sanchez v Nick Diaz for a nice fast paced fight :D

Didnt UFC used to be 30 min rounds or even longer when it first started ??

MMA uses more energy than boxing, the legs have some of the largest muscles in the body and are used more than in boxing.

Grappling uses a massive amount of energy too, not to mention sprawling and jumping back up, or takedowns.

@Richie, loved that fight, with Diaz elbowing Sanchez while trash talking him. Shame he fell out with Dana White.

Diaz and Sanchez are bonkers cardio machines, not like some of the heavy weights! the 200lbs fighter who cut to middle weight and gas far too quickly, I'm looking at you Shields!

A good scrap was Sanchez v Clay Guida... Just a all out brawl... Never a boring fight if Sanchez or Guida are involved :D

I personally cant see how boxing uses more energy that MMA.

Boxing is well 2D its literally just punches and people hang on to recover.

MMA has punches/kicks/grappling and when you see some of the way the guys train for it its insane.

Few vids on youtube of MMA fighters training.

I'm just asking a question here, after reading your comments so far but do you think boxers can go for longer because its harder in MMA because you use your feet and go on the floor so you move more and spend more energy and cant last aslong? I just thought maybe its easier for boxers when it comes to reserving energy, because they're always on their feet, and dont have to do ground game.

Have you ever had a play fight with a friend where your on the sofa and the floor and it really kills you, takes allot of energy.
